I'm not sure where to post this. I bought a truck up in the north west to put to work in Midland TX. When I go pick it up I won't be hauling a load just ferrying it to here. I plan to lease it on with a company in Odessa.
What insurance and paperwork will I need to have. Do I have to stop at road side scales if I'mnot for hire? Thanks for your help.

You just need insurance and most cases ifta permit which you can purchase per state but I wouldn’t care for all that mainly just insirance Incase something we’re to happen.
I believe dmv has “1 trip permits” you fill out and put on the windshield. I keep some at the office and take with me whenever I’m picking up a truck.
I bought a truck in Florida and a trailer in Texas same time. I pulled a power only to Texas and then my trailer with a load back to Sacramento. Had no issues. But also ran at night ( how my schedule worked out) most scales were closedVampire Thanks this. -
I checked out insurance. They want $1500 down to start a policy. I won't need it once I'm leased on.

I bought mine in texas and brought it back to california. All i did was purchase a moving permit with my dmv, purchase a 6-7 day insurance policy from Classic Insurance, put "Not for hire" on a piece of paper then tape em on the doors(make sure to remove any previous company/DOT/MC stickers, if any) and youre golden. No scales, port of entry or anything.
Hulld and Tombstone69 Thank this. -
If you’re buying it from a dealer they will give you a temp permit to get home, then all you need is a short term insurance policy. No need to worry about IFTA because it’s not a commercial vehicle on the way home.
Short Fuse EOD and roadmap65 Thank this. -

Congratulations dude I just bought my 1st truck last week and drove it all the way from Colorado to North Carolina all you need is
Short term Bob tail insurance
Proof of sale
Copy of your title
Temp plate from dealer.
Now your short term can be bought from
classictruckinsurance.com
I bought the 30 day policy so I can have insurance while the truck is being leased on. Cost $371.
And if I were you change all the fluids in that truck ASAP. Don't believe a word the dealer tells you. Just change them all now and you feel better. Good luck -
Make sure you put
"Not for hire"
"Private Use Only"
Stickers on both sides of truck
Texas is a stickler if no plates and no ifta sticker.
Like mentioned above get permits from the state your in. To travel to the border of the next. You can also depending o the state buy your permits online and pri t them all out. So you ahead of the game.
Also don't skip. Weigh stations. Just drive thru empty lane. The Cops. Love to run ya down to check your papers.
Just tape in front passenger did window each states permit And roll on down the road. -
Vampire Thanks this.
