Hi all, I'm brand new here and just now exploring trucking as an option. My Dad was an OTR trucker and my brother was regional for quite a few years, and now I reckon it's my turn to take a look. At the moment I'm looking into every option and factor that I can, and something my wife and I discussed/were wondering was whether any companies allow families to ride, i.e husband/wife team with kids, etc, or if that's purely an owner/operator option. We're used to being in close quarters and my wife is currently homeschooling our children, and it's something my dad suggested quite a few times. We spend as much time together as we can as it is, so figured it might be worth looking into. I'm asking from complete ignorance here, so any experiences, insight, procedural/legal requirements, etc would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, and please don't burn too much skin off :D.

UPDATE: Thanks for all the info, probably not the way to go. Thanks all!

Most companies would give your spouse a riders permit and would probably charge you an insurance premium for her riding with you but children are a different story. Most insurance companies do not allow children to ride unless theyve reached a certain age, even then they may limit how many can ride with you.

It’s a major liability unless you own the truck.

Throughout the summer it’s not uncommon to see a family of 4 hop out at the truck stop. Who knows if they own the truck or got permission from their company.

the kids will be bored out of their minds in the truck ! what would they be doing beside sleep

to fit a whole family in, buy an ARI Legacy Sleeper truck

honestly it is going to be hard for 4 people. work, time, eating, hygiene, space, activities, etc...

Trucking is no place for kids. I've seen families , out of desperation, climb out of a truck, and I just SMH. I simply can't believe there's nowhere else for the kids to go. Granted, I didn't know the situation, but by the looks of it, it was no joy ride. To drag kids along in a truck, just shows how selfish the driver is, not thinking of the kids needs. Matter of fact, I'm so against it, to me, it borderlines child abuse.:biggrin_25513:

Don't think about the kids, putting the wife in harms way may be ok but trucking is dangerous, people get killed and having kids stuck in a 325 cubic foot box and getting into an accident, it could have only one outcome.

Yeah, I've seen people at drop yards with kids that look miserably bored.

In one case, the kid was miserable from being sick and threw up beside the truck in the Meijer drop lot. I wonder if the odds are very high for young travelers without as strong an immune system to pick up illness left and right from trucks stops or plazas or especially some customers.

@Ridgeline suggests the possibility of severe accidents. It might only take a mix of kids bored on the top bunk or moving and a hard braking incident from being cutoff to have them tripping over or falling down.

Back in 2008 when the economy was so bad, I saw a couple of trucks who had the family with them. One had what looked like a 4yr old girl and a 10 mo old boy. I can't imagine kids being on a truck that long. Also each kid would have to have some way of being in a carseat or restrained in the back bunk. A lot of trucking companies won't let a child ride unless they are 10 or over, some are even older than that.

My daughter inlaw said she and her brother lived in the truck while their parents drove and they were homeschooled. They had a piece of plywoood to put across the front seats for her brother to sleep on. This was in the late 80's also.
