They should do that for you since they don't allow you to chain

191 south to us20 . if you are in a tanker with hazmat you will not be able to run this route because hamat is not allowed between west yellowstone and big sky. So 84 to 287 to 87 to us20 is your route. These are both good routes I have taken them many times... I90 to i15 there is 2 big mountain passes between bozeman and butte and a couple small hills between butte and idaho falls.. The other routes are beautiful drives and not much traffic. Good ol 2 lane not really any mountain passes just a couple small hills. If you take 191 to us20 be careful on 191 from bozeman/Belgrade be careful once u get thru the canyon. It is a winding road next to the river and if you are there in the early mornings there is a million dump trucks and contractors running to the jobsites in big sky. They run channel 8 on the cb thru there i would highly recommend to run that channel until u get to big sky.

You won’t get there without a few hills, and as a ballpark the difference in mileage will be how far west you go before dropping south. Going to Whitehall and cutting down to Dillon is also a decent route, once you get over Cardwell Hill on 90 you’ll be in the valley all the way south thru Dillion and then it’s easy running on 15 from there south. But that way is a little farther than dropping south thru Ennis and such.

Probably should mention that in winter, snow and wind on 20 around Island Park can get sporty and it gets shut down occasionally. Keep an eye on the weather forecast.

Is there less hills on this route than going straight down on US191?

They are about the same. Both routes are good . if you are worried about hills u should stay east of the rocky mountains. There is b trains and maxis running those routes grossing 100k+

The route @Cattleman84 Recommended is better than taking 191. However if you want to know the local super secret way… Connect the dots between Whitehall just west of Bozeman and go to Dillon. Nice flat road not too many turns or hills. Once you take this route after you take 287 or 191 you will be amazed how many more trucks take this route and you will never go back. MT55 -MT41

They are about the same... the hills are just a couple little ones. Nothing to get worried about

Used to have a house in the river community just south of Silver Star. Wish I could have afforded to keep it.

A deer guard can be real handy on the Whitehall route. Possibly even a Moose guard.
