Hello, I'm new here and have a question for all of you experienced truckers.......do any of you drive barefoot?......I was told some do, which I find hard to believe, due to the heavy metal pedals on the floor......I would also appreciate some feedback on why you do or don't, and also any laws or websites you may know about which I could use for reference purposes. Thank you...
A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO MAKE THE CONSUMER'S LIFE SO EASY!!!

There was a trucker stopped at the weight station on I65 a few month back that was naked. The DOT officer opend the door to see if he had his seatbelt on and well, that is all that he had on.
Oldironfan and HotH2o Thank this. -
Hi there, not sure if it's legal or not ?.. would be good to know though!
I know several drivers, my d/h included, who take off there shoes and put them to the left of the seat (hubby uses a shoe tray cut down to fit) They do it because it keeps the gravel and such out of the cab and therefore out of the sleeper part! Just a lot cleaner that way. -
Lmaoooo too funny!!!

As a self-professed barefoot driver I find I do my best driving barefoot. While I was learning to drive I was discouraged from this practice and it was deemed unsafe.
Until recently, I was lead to believe that it was illegal to drive barefoot. As it happens, its not! Laws against driving barefoot in the United States have been called a popular "urban legend."
In the state of New York it is lawful to drive barefoot, but it is not recommended. As a matter of fact, in the majority of the states you are indeed allowed to drive barefoot.
In Hong Kong you are prohibited from driving barefoot or with sandals and must be in "proper footwear" at all times when operating a motor vehicle. Contrarily, in Brazil driving barefoot is recommended. I think I may have to relocate to Brazil where I can be encouraged to be barefoot as much as possible!
There was one instance that I had heard about where it had been given punishment for. The driver had been speeding, and had received an additional fine because of his bare feet. It turns out that this was unsafe practice and could have been the factor that was causing him to speed.
Personally, I feel that I have more control when my foot is on the petal. If you think about it, you have a shoe that is an inch or so thick, or your bare foot - in my case I feel that the bare foot enables me to gauge the pressure that I am applying to the pedal. The consensus is that I am wrong in the opinion of people that I have asked. I guess this is all in my head. There are many that like to drive barefoot, and we do claim that it is "safer". I love to go barefoot whenever possible, and find that driving barefoot imposes less of a risk than driving in three inch heels.
I agree though, that in the summer while it is hot your feet get warm and my sweat if you have to apply the brake, or the gas for extended periods of time and your foot may slip off of the pedal. Although, I find when I am driving in shoes as crocs, or flip flops they tend to slip off of my feet and impose more of a hazard than if I were to wear nothing on my feet at all.All4Safety Thanks this. -
I've never driven barefoot, but have worn slippers to drive!

Don't know if its legal either. But I drive barefoot a lot, both in a normal vehicle and big truck. During the winter I usually wear sneakers or work boots. But in spring and summer I usually just have a pair of deck shoes or flip flops I can slip on or off. Pedals don't bother me. Then ofcourse I don't think twice about taking the dog for a walk down the street barefoot either.
As to why I do it, I don't know. When its nice I don't like to wear shoes. During the summer Im probably barefoot more than not. -
My hubby drives with his socks on his shoes are by his side. he also drives with his shirt open and pants undone

I have no idea how accurate this is... (it's coming from a prior employer)...soo....
They stated that in NY a commercial motor vehicle is considered your workplace. Therefore, fun things like OSHA apply. We were required to wear steel-toed boots around the trucks, as well as while driving them. Smoking was also prohibited, as it isn't allowed inside on the job in NY.
I typically wear sneakers, myself. Haven't tried barefoot yet.
