I've been driving a governed truck for the last 10 years. I've noticed here in the last year a lot of you guys are driving slower, either by choice, or because your company decided to turn your trucks down. Well, I have a bone to pick with some of you. It's no secret that basic manners have seem to have gone out the window, and heck, I'll probably even get flamed for this post, but here it goes anyway. I'm governed at 62 mph. (Yep, I drive for everyone's FAVORITE trucking company out of NW Arkansas.) For years now 99% of the drivers that drove governed trucks got along great with one another. If I'm driving at my top speed in a 65 mph zone and a Roadway truck comes around me, I know he's governed, so I back out of the throttle, let him come on around, give him a friendly flash, he comes back in front of me, then I bring it back up to my cruising speed and everyone is happy. In the past, if I passed another governed truck, they almost always gave me the same courtesy. We all knew we were governed with one or two MPH difference, so we backed out of the throttle, let the faster truck come on around, everyone was happy.

Obviously, the point of this post is, that courtesy seems to have vanished. Why? These days I'll come up one of these trucks that their companies just turned them down (yeah I mean you Celadon!) driving down the road 60 mph. When I come up on him, I have two choices. Back out of it and drive 59 mph for the rest of my trip, or pass him, which SHOULD be a quick and painless maneuver, but it rarely is these days. No, I'll get in the left hand lane. Ten miles later, my passenger door is even with his rear tandems. Another ten miles down the road, we are neck and neck. I look over, he's looking straight ahead, oblivious to the fact that I'm beside him, and the long line of traffic behind me losing their minds. In my mirrors, I have an super trucker in a Peterbilt two inches off my ICC bumper calling me everything but a white man. Mr. Steering Wheel Holder doesn't have his radio on. I give the horn a tug, he finally looks over, smiles, then waves, and goes back to his fixed stare straight ahead. Ten more miles tick by, I'm making progress! Now my tandems are even with his driver doors. Peterbilt guy is fuming mad now...what does he want me to do, slam on the brakes? I can't get it going any faster....5 more miles click by. Dang it, I think I can get this thing over without clipping his hood, not sure though, let's give it a few more....Ok....Got it!

Now the real fun starts. I get to watch the ten mile parade of traffic go by, all of them flipping me the bird. Yeah, I'm the jerk.

On the otherhand...there's the clown with the 66 mph truck, that passes my 65 mph truck. With a little help from me. Who makes it his mission in life, for the next 60 miles...to completely #### with me. By not applying his cruise...and getting on down the road.

He bounces back and forth, from 60 mph to 66 mph...on flat ground. All the while....I'm right on his ### trying to keep my cruise engaged.

It has got to suck for you guys driving governed trucks. But I believe that if mr 62 mph wants to pass Mr 60 mph, he ought to wait untill there's nobody coming strong in the hammer lane. Why he thinks 6 trucks and 20 4-wheelers should get jammed behind him for miles is beyond me.

Note to the 60 mph governed trucks - If I'm doing 75 in the hammer lane and coming strong, don't expect me and everyone behind me to drop 15 mph to let you out.

I always wait until nothing is coming, but when the guy keeps you out in the hammer lane for 15 minutes, the traffic is going to pile up behind you. I don't understand the mentality of these people, are they too proud to let that slow JB Hunt truck pass? If you can't handle being passed, then go work for someone that will give you a faster truck. But more often than not, it's one of those "steering wheel holders" with a blank stare on their faces and just don't care.

When you and those 20 4 wheelers are jammed behind me, what do you suggest I do? I can't speed up. All I can do to rapidly get out of your way is to brake it down.

Yup. I agree. If I get jammed behind a slow truck while he's blocking traffic for 5 miles, he will hear about it on the radio. It wont be clean either LOL

I believe impeeding traffic tickets should cost more in fines than your typical speeding citation.

well I'll just set my cruise at 40 mph from now on to stay out of your way. Maybe I should just creep along on the shoulder with my 4 ways on. Swift wants to do 59 in front of me in the right hand lane, I guess I'm not entitled to pass him.

The point I'm making, is If I'm hung up in the left lane, it's the guy on the right keeping me there, why in the hell am I the one impeding traffic?

If your a couple of miles into an attempted pass, and decide to back out of that stalemate, I have no problem with it. Most guys will understand your predicament, and apreciate your copitulation on aborting said pass.

Like I said, its gotta suck driving a 60 mph truck. Not trying to pick on ya mustard. You sound like you try and do the best you can. Relax.

It's more the situation that frustrates everyone and there are no winners when the entire interstate is now doing 10 mph under the speedlimit.

Just an FYI for you and all the others. If you're in the left lane hammering your little heart out, and catch me on a hill.

You need to get back in the right lane....as best you can, and as soon as you can, to let the 63 mph behind me pulling 10k get around.

Don't expect me to slow down so you can get over to let the empty rooster cruisers by. I'll be grossing about 79k, and want over that hill too. My truck is set to pull....not race.

But I always find myself in a race...with a triple digit truck, that can't pull itself out of a wet paper bag...let alone the left lane.

I guess a couple of things could happen when your jammed up and can't get around a slow truck. Ease off of the throttle and at the same time flip your right turn signal on. It speeds up the others sooner. Although the one riding your bumper might get a little upset or you might also have to deal with the person who moves in beside you to hang ya out to dry! Yes I have witnessed this done by trucks first hand.

Move to the right as soon as you can and take the next exit or rest area. Let them pass. The knuckle head that won't let you around isn't going to give and someone needs to.

Had a truck pass me a couple of weeks ago on a good downhill. He passes me and I am rolling around 72mph, then cuts right back in front of me and puts on his brakes:biggrin_2554:. Not sure what that was all about. There wasn't anyone behind him, so, then I'm pulling 40k up the other side with no momentum.:biggrin_2552:

I drive a 65mph truck. The stories could go on and on about things that have happened. Guess my 2 cents. Communication and knowing when and how to rectify the situation. Be safe out there.

Yeah its happened to me countless times an if I see another truck passing me slowly and people behind him ill bump the cruise down 1 or 2 mph to let him by faster, but very few people will do that these days because they think by slowing down that 1 or 2 mph for 1 minute is gonna screw there whole day up omg!. LOL. But it happened to me today me an another guy tooling along 80 in ohio at 65mph come up on this guy doing 60 so left lane clear I go to pass him should get around him quick right? Wrong no he decides hes gonna speed up to 65 and leave me dead even side by side going the exact same speed, grr ok now I got a fast truck coming up on me so I back out of it and go behind him. Now he wants to play lets go 62 them 65 on an on an on for about 20 miles, then finally he drop it to 55 and I hammer around him and look at em and hes fiddling with something on his passenger seat.
