Can anyone help me understands the FMCSA required "DVIR written report" vs. "Peoplenet"-Inspections tab?

    Noob/Rookie/Greenhorn questions below:

-Are there any DOT specified standards on length of time required to prove the CMV to be fully operational? (3+ minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.)
-Do you still have to retain a paper-copy of your DVIR for 6 months?
-How do the Peoplenet inspections differ? (i.e. pre, inter, post?) Are there DOT requirements on the different types of inspections?
-Is there any drawback/disadvantage of conducting my pre-trip inspection before tapping On-Duty? Is that legal?
-Does anyone have a link to a peoplenet user manual? (I still don't have my own truck).

Sorry this if this is a redundant question and/or posted in the wrong place.
I searched "DVIR Peoplenet" and only saw one post. I'd link to it, but I don't know how. Just search "DVIR Peoplenet". You'll see it.

    Thanks.

Just started using people net a couple months ago.

Personally, I do pretrip on duty because that's how we did it on paper logs.
Usually show 10~ minutes, depends on how long it takes.

Only way I use the inter inspection is if I d&h and keep going.
Not too sure about the exact details on the requirements for law but that's how I was told to do use it.
Safety dept has no gripes and they've been checked at scales before *shrugs*

    Hope that helped.

    Thanks.
I asked because I did a pretrip earlier this week "On-Duty" and found a flat tire, went "Off-Duty", got it fixed at a T/A across the street and lost nearly 3 hours off my 14.
I'm thinking I might not do my pretrip that way again, if it's legal.

Anyone know if this is acceptable?

Here is a post about how to log repairs properly and I think it might help with you pre-trip question as well.

    Thanks for the link.

I'm somewhat familiar/struggle with the phrase "readiness for work".
If I found a flat tire before my 10-hr was up; was I ready for work? Could I log personal conveyance to T/A for repairs, legally? Why would I, in a perfect scenario, interrupt my 10-hr break to get a flat tire fixed?
I only get paid to drive, right?

    There's so much to learn.

When do most drivers consider themselves "required to be in readiness to work"? I'm thinking it's after every 10 hours.

What Would an Owner Operator's Accountant do? Seriously. What happens when I'm not in "required readiness to work" and I find a problem?

I always conduct my pretrip while off duty using peoplenet. Then I go on duty and enter the info into the computer.

I use peoplenet also but also required to do a DVIR.... point being the carrier must have one in his file for 90 days in an audit. The rule is the same for your carrier . The fine for him will hurt if they come in and audit and there's not a rolling 90 days of VCR's in the file.

    just sayin....

This is what I do - we save every second of on duty time for driving.

Same here too - you must fill out a post trip DVIR on paper that the carrier stores, and keep the LAST copy only in your truck.

As for the horrid Peoplenet, we are required to Per, inter, and Post once in each shift, but no time has ever been specified - in all goody good reality it should be 15 minutes, but as I said, we do it as a notation rather than a time period to save precious on duty time.

    Good question!

I've been using people net for about 2 months now. Before this I've been using the Quallcomm. With Peoplenet you do have more control of your logs when it comes to on duty off duty time. Here is some tips with the system: The inter trip inspection is more for people with flatbeds. With flatbed you have to do an inspection every 3 hours or 150 miles. When you click on inter trip, there is a white box that pops up for you to type an entry. You have to type in something to press the enter button. Most people put in "No defects found" or "Inspected load securement". If you start to drive and don't manually press the drive button, after a few mintues a pop up will appear asking you to press skip or not. Since the screen is pressure based it's easy it hit the skip button by mistake. If you press the skip you'll go to off duty. The computer won't ask you to go on the drive line again until the truck comes to a complete stop. So you can end up driving for miles and miles in off duty status before you realize the error. It's best to manually enter any status change rather than let people net do it for you. You fill out the DVIR at the end of everyday you spent on duty. This takes the place of the driver's inspection report so you don't need to have a paper copy. If you change trailers you have to fill a new one out on the people net for each one. I didn't notice a "No inspection needed" function on the Peoplenet for when you are off duty on your home time. Your truck is suppose to have a copy of the Manuel of the elog system on your truck. You can get a ticket without one.
