I've been questioning this for a while now. When I started driving my trainer, an O/O leased on, had me filling out the logbook depicted in the examples.
1. Shipper/Commodity, he would have me place a number (1,2,3) by the description, then the Shipper's name, the City/State where we loaded, what the commodity is, and then the BOL/Ticket number.
As you can see it is nearly impossible to make this look neat, especially when you have several during the day. I have talked to another driver with this company, and he told me that I must only list the first shipper and commodity, and like this... APAC / Rock. I've had yet another tell me that he lists each, as in... APAC / 1" Rock / APAC / Man-Sand. In both cases they did not write down the BOL#.
Is there any method that is more likely to be accepted by the majority of the DOT inspectors?
2. The REMARKS section.
In CDL school I was instructed to list the City/State under the flag, and your action such as PTI, Loading, Unloading, D & H. Also I started out just drawing a straight line, not a bent one. I've since changed this to placing the City/State, location (I'm aware of the others, such as milemarker, intersections, ect. ), above the flag.
While investigating this I've learned that the only requirement is to write the City/State, or other accepted locations. Nothing more, other than PTI (Pre or Post). Now I'll add the company I drive for requires a Post Trip be shown, not a Pre-Trip. The Pre-Trip can be flagged if we so desire.
Is there a requirement for more than you're location at a change of duty status, for the Remarks?
***Disclaimer***
My penmanship is lousy, has been for years, and is not getting any better with age. So I'm trying to make my sheets look as neat as I can.
Thanks...

Flag the location only. Carrier may require more, but not the DOT.bbechtel16, Onetruckpony, CondoCruiser and 1 other person Thank this. -
Thanks.. All the other info is self explanatory. Those I questioned seems to differ from one driver to the next. This next week will determine if they want me to keep putting all the superfluous info, or just the basic requirements.
BTW, the owner's wife, is the one that initially wanted everything, city/town, Bol#, ect.. when I blew my nose, the type of tissue.... The other drivers however says she goes a bit overboard, and have not been providing all that stuff, and has not been questioned by her or DOT.
Hopefully I will eventually ease into being allowed to mount a laptop stand and use my laptop. Even though my logs may not (ok they don't) appear as if I'm concerned about neatness, I'm very picky. I'd rather use Eclipse for my logs, spreadheet programs for our Tripsheets and Loadsheets, than hand write them.
Thanks again!! -
If you have multiple loads on a log sheet, putting B/L numbers only takes up less room.
FMCSA regs require city/state locations, not activities. Had a guy several years ago that was putting things like PTI, T/C, L/C, and PIPI in the remarks section. I could figure out PTI and Tire checks, but I could not figure out PIPI every few hours, so I asked him. He said, "you know, Pee Pee!" TMI Too much information!!! -
I think them wanting me to put all that info was just to mess with me. If not, then I should have received a message yesterday about last week's logs, and so far have not. Some of the stuff that goes on is childish.
Thanks Scalemaster!! -
Yeah Eaton they gave you all the good info. Companies have their own little quirks based on the safety/log dept. Many drivers confuse regulations by what a company said or word of mouth. Your logs don't look bad. There's a whole lot worse out there. -
Yeah, there's a big difference between what the FMCSA requires, and what your carrier may require. Your carrier can always require additional info or rules. But, the minimum must be met.
In all honesty, put as little as possible. Your BOL and receipts will indicate what you've done elsewhere. No need to have the DOT officer on a roadside Level 3 questioning what exactly your onduty activities were. -
To much for the shipping document information. Some companies don't realize the Shipping document number 'OR"(they don't see that sometimes) shipper name/commodity. That gives me a headache and I get enough of those from trying to read some of the drivers logs l.o.l. Yours is neat though
-
I only put the first BOL number even if I haul 4 or 5 loads. Never had a problem with that.
