Hi all,
I was just offered a decent enough sounding job as an employee of someone who is just starting out as a new company, and was wondering what pitfalls I need to look out for, or it is even a good idea.
I would be an employee, not a independent contractor, for someone who is buying a truck and contracting to UPS. I have 10+ years driving, and just am not sure if this is a good idea. Dispatch would be done by UPS, but what about repairs, etc..
Any help/ideas?
Drive for UPS contractor or not?

Me personally, I would not drive for a contractor period.
You are better off either being directly employed by the company itself or buying your own truck and putting it on with the company.
Working for a contractor usually means lousy bennies (if you even get them), sometimes paying for stuff out of your own pocket, 1099's, paychecks bouncing/late....alot of these guys are just one engine rebuild away from bankruptcy.
Plus the contractor is sort of a "middleman" that you have to split the pie with...UPS is gonna get their $$$$ no matter what.
You're better off skipping the middleman and getting your own, bigger slice of the pie.jakebrake12 Thanks this. -
Do your homework. It may be a another blue picture trap for the next driver that looks like a big lollipop like the way fred ex and fred ex ground is.

Not so fast here. What's wrong with a working for a contractor ? There are loads of contractors in this biz. My concerns would be a financial statement from the prospective contractor. Is he already in the Biz ? For how long ? What kind of truck is he buying ? Is he successful in his other ventures ? Does he have a tax guy ? Is UPS satisified with this contractor ?
There is a difference between buying a worn out POS, experienced or in-experienced, is he financially OK or in over his head ? Food for thought.Lil'Devil Thanks this. -
I thought UPS was a all union shop.
The doubles side of things, not the old Overnite side. Even most of their terminals were union at one time.
You go pulling UPS doubles and pull into a all union shop there moght be a big fight on your hands.
Just curious -
I think the brown shirts are union, BUT, UPS farms out a lot of package freight onto 53'ers. I've hauled many a load on my companys trailers. Live load/unload. And I ain't union.

UPS contracts out a lot of work. When i worked for Barr Nunn, I hauled a lot of stuff in and out of UPS hubs. Same with Fed Ex and DHL. They all outsource some work to the 53 fters

Now that i think about it, I hauled hub to hub for DHL and Fed Ex and Conway but if memory serves me correct I never hauled anything out for UPS. It was always from factories and warehouses going into UPS and grabbing an empty and going back out.....hmmm
