Recently got a msg for idling too much, cause my truck needs a parked regen, I think. So, I decided to just let it go and fill up until it goes in to stage 2 (blinking). Well now it smokes really bad at highway speed, it looks like I am on fire. People honking, pointing at me, like they think I am going to blow up or something. So, I know its doing a regen, buy whats up with so much smoke? My last truck never produced any smoke, just smelled like a dirty cow. Its 2012 Cummings isx by the way

Might be time for the shop to hook it up to the laptop and do a forced regen. One type works on pressure the other on heat. Can't remember which.

It really shouldn't be doing that lol.

During a proper regen the aftertreatment injector, or doser, injects fuel into the exhaust after the turbo. This injected fuel reacts with the DOC by a catalytic reaction to burn and create high exhaust temps that bake off the collected soot in the DPF. When the DOC loses its efficiency, it can't complete that catalytic reaction and that injected fuel doesn't burn and escapes out the exhaust as smoke. So basically smoking during a regen means the DOC is not working efficiently. The DOC could be plugged, dirty, or simply worn out and needs replacement. A faulty injector could also be to blame due to improper spray pattern or volume. First step is to remove and clean, (or just replace) the doser injector. Then if the DOC and DPF has not been cleaned in a while, they should be removed and cleaned. Cleaning is a 50/50 thing in your case. Usually once a regen starts to produce smoke, it means the DOC is worn out and needs replacement.

Thanks, I had this truck in the shop 4 times in last couple of months for this particular problem, nothing has change. It never blinked, so I know its doing something. If I keep driving, how bad will it get?

It will continue to degrade. The dpf will continue to plug up since it isn't being regened properly and the soot content will continue to increase. You will eventually be doing regens every 20 mins and smoking all the time.

I've driven MaxxForce motor Prostars that had gotten to the point of asking for a regen every couple hours or so. What a joke.
