Just bought a 500 gb external hard drive. I see Netflix has a download option but I'm not able to figure out if you can download to an external hard drive so I can plug it into my TV without having to use the laptop. I can see why they might not want you to be able to do this easily to prevent piracy. Anyone know how or if you can do this?

You can't. The download is encrypted with a form of DRM (Digital Rights Management) produced by Google. In a nutshell only a few devices can playback that content as Netflix is set flags to not allow it to be done.

From Downloading TV shows and movies on Netflix:

What do I need to download TV shows and movies on Netflix?
    • An internet connection, and
    • An active Netflix streaming account, and
    • An iPhone, iPad, or iPod running iOS 9.0 or later, or
    • A phone or tablet running Android 4.4.2 or later, or
    • An Amazon Fire tablet running Fire OS 4.0 or later, or
    • A tablet or computer running Windows 10 Version 1607 (Anniversary Update) or later, and
    • The latest version of the Netflix Apple iOS, Netflix Android, Amazon Fire, or Netflix Windows 10 app

Download to your phone or tablet, then play it on your TV via HDMI out cable, Chromecast, Apple TV, or whatever you prefer.
Google how to play Netflix on TV from phone

It only let's you download stuff for so long before it has to be renewed. So if the licence runs out it won't renew. I fill up my phone and tablet when at home, there is way more than I can watch for one tour

I don't have an expensive phone with a lot of memory. I'm not sure how big of an SD card it can hold. My goal was to download entire seasons of shows wherever I have WiFi access onto the hard drive. A tablet might be an option. Makes me wish I'd bought that instead of the hard drive.

I have a 32 gig s6 edge+... I don't fill it up with pictures or videos or tons of apps though. Usually have like 10 gigs available for Netflix...

I really don't see much advantage in downloading media for offline viewing unless perhaps you regularly break out in the sticks away from net access? And as long as you have an unlimited data plan on your phone, along with an HDMI out cable to your TV, you're good to go

We fuel exclusively at PFJ so I break at them almost daily. And their $100/year wifi access is pretty good. The speed at most sites, as long as you can be somewhat near an antenna, typically exceeds 15 mbps and will easily stream most vid streaming sites at 1080p, even between 19:00-22:00 peak periods. I'm currently at the Pilot in Mauston, WI and this is the speed as measured by their router. [Don't confuse PFJ free wifi with PFJ paid wifi. You can't do anything with their free wifi]

I missed this earlier. What kind of phone do you have? Anything made in the last 10 years is at least SHD, which supports up to 32gb. Most of them are SDXC, which is up to 2TB on a micro Sd card. I.e spend $20 on an sd card from Amazon to add 64GB of storage.

The question would be getting it to your TV. That would depend on your TV and phone capabilities.

Another option would be a cheap fire tablet with hdmi adapter to connect it to the tv. I don't have netflix but have downloaded movies and tv shows from amazon prime on mine. This also provides a portable option for use in waiting areas loading or unloading out of the truck. You can pick one up for under $50. I prefer not to bog my phone down with too many apps.
