Hi Folks, I am testing for my Doubles Triples endorsement. I am in the State of Massachusetts. I took the test the other day and failed. Know why? Because the chapter in my RMV issued CDL book on Doubles/Triples had only about a quarter of the information that was on the test. I thoroughly studied D/T for about 3 days knowing it inside and out and working with the practice questions. I KNEW the answers were correct, but when I sat down at the computer terminal, it was throwing me questions that I hadn't even heard of in the book! I complained to the RMV people and they said, you got a problem with it, take it up with the Federal Government. Fat chance I'll ever get that changed. I'm assuming that the only way to pass this test is to take it over and over again at $30/pop until I pass. Their way of getting more money out of you.
Anyway, my question pertains to the websites with the test questions on doubles/triples that I find when I Google Doubles Triples. One website which seems okay is:
www.truckercountry.com/cdl-doubles-triples-test-2.html
But there is one question on there which is different on another test website which is:
http://www.aitaonline.com/Info/CDL/Tests/DblTripVehiclesSampleTestF.html
The question is as follows:
4. When coupling the rear trailer, the correct trailer height is:
A Six inches of space between the upper and lower fifth wheel
B Slightly lower than the fifth wheel
C When the locking jaws are closed around the kingpin
D The kingpin touches the fifth wheel
I answered "C" and on Trucker Country test, "C" is the correct answer, on AITA Online "B" is the correct answer.
Can anyone clarify which is the correct answer? I am assuming the correct answer is "B", but you experienced Doubles/Triples drivers would be able to tell me which is correct for sure.
Thank, Zeus

B is logical, but these tests were created by government employees, so logic goes out the window.
Harvey Wallbangerr Thanks this. -
The jaws can not be closed before you couple the trailer......."B" is the answer because it would pertain to any trailer not just the dolly .......the question says the correct height of the trailer (big hint)
heyns57 Thanks this. -
The locking jaws around the kingpin does not refer to height. The question asks for correct trailer height. So from there you can narrow the questions down to "A" and "B". And since you want positive pressure between the fifth wheel and the bottom of the trailer, "B" is the correct answer.
These state test follow federal guidelines and almost all states are identical. The majority of the questions are the practice questions you see in the book and not questions made up on these online practice tests. One can easily pass these tests without paying someone.
I'm reading out of the manual right now....
Connect Converter Dolly to Rear Trailer
#2 * Make sure trailer height is correct. (It must be slightly lower than the center of the fifth wheel, so trailer is raised slightly when dolly is pushed under).
In fact that's one of the practice questions. It even tells you those questions are on the test.
I suggest you reread the chapter. It should be 5 pages
Answer the practice questions in the manual and check your answers. Reread on the ones you miss. The answers are there. You just missed it.otherhalftw Thanks this. -
Condo is.....(oh this hurts to admit)...is correct!
On all of the CDL tests...if you carefully read through the answers...don't just grab the first that seems right...you can always eliminate at least one, sometimes two that are not related to the question.
Common sense will usually prevail, but the person taking these test will tend to "over think" the question and/or answer.CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
Here's the questions you have to answer: Send me $30!
Everybody, let Crylozeus answer and ask questions first.
1. What is a converter dolly
2. Do converter dollies have spring brakes?
3. What three methods can you use to secure a second trailer before coupling?
4. How do you check to make sure trailer height is correct before coupling?
5. What do you check when making a visual check of coupling?
6. Why should you pull a dolly out from under a trailer before you disconnect it from the trailer in front?
7. What should you check for when inspecting the converter dolly? The pintle hook?
8. Should the shut-off valves on the rear of the last trailer be open or closed? On the first trailer in a set of doubles? On the middle trailer on a set of triples?
9. How can you test that air flows to all trailers? -
2. No...they are Summer Brakes!
3. Bungee cords and duct tape!
4. Drop it on your foot...if it hits your chin it's too high!
5. Your safety glasses are clean, so not to impair your view!
6. Because it's very hard to get the trailer from between the tractor and the dolly!
7. a. The positive ground is connected so you don't get a shock!
b. Make sure the worm is still wriggling!
8. Open of course for all three...this is code for "on or off"...they must be turned on before working! [always think sex...innuendo rules!]
9. Attach a balloon to the valve and see if it fills up!
What? Is that all there is to double/Triples? Easy test for sure!!!!!Wargames Thanks this. -
