This trailer is much different than a standard short pup. There's no fifth wheel here just a permanently mounted turntable. It never gets unhooked. You only unhook at the pintle hook and leave the drawbar and the trailer stand. A lot easier than a pup trailer. Most of the time this type of trailer is hooked to a truck that is already hauling cargo. That type of truck has no fifth either. You'll see this type of set-up out west and they are referred to as truck and trailers. Just about all of the gasoline companies out west run truck and trailers. They do this because the set-up is much more maneuvering than the standard SEMI.
Doubles, backing lead up to pup...how hard is it?

when the o/p said it did not have a dolly,. this is what i thought of. -

The old argument is that two trailers should have two tractors and two drivers. So, hooking up two trailers puts one driver out of a job. Better efficiency means unemployment for some.
Teachers keep their pay up because they control class size. As drivers we could keep our wages up if we controlled more. Trailers going from 48 foot to 53 foot laid people off. There are counter arguments also, such as companies need higher profits to exist.
Do we really need doubles and triples? Or do we need jobs? -
The old argument is just that: old.
Of course companies are going to work towards more efficient trucking. Their job really is to look after the bottom line.
At some point, someone decided to make 48' trailers instead of 40's. Should we go back to 40 footers?
The problem isn't lack of work; there's lots of vacant job openings. There's two problems, one of which we agree on: driver pay that hasn't kept up with the times. The other is too many companies that treat their drivers as just another commodity instead of a valued member of their staff.
The reason for sets in the LTL sector is obvious: yes, they provide more capacity volume-wise than a 53', but they are also the most versatile for an operation thats primary function is local pickup and delivery. If you tried doing that in a long trailer in my area, you would seriously hinder your ability to service the same customer base that you can much more easily with a 28' or 32'TequilaSunrise and okiedokie Thank this. -
So you put a driver out of work because of the "other guy" pulling more trailers then pay the "other guy" more money. Lets face it. Not all drivers are up to pulling 3 trailers or a T&T,ect. As they say you get what you pay for.

Why sidetrack the thread?

I don't know exactly what manner of configuration OP is referring to, but I've personally only dealt with conventional doubles, which is two 28' trailers.
Positioning the lead is not as big a deal as it looks. Proper setup is the key. You must have enough room to get directly in front of the tail and as straight as possible. Also, when positioning the dolly make sure the tail trailer isn't high, or you might wind up shoving the dolly completely under it and locking the fifth wheel to the kingpin. That's not a particularly nice situation.
Once you do that, just back up the lead trailer slowly until you get close to the dolly. Connect the eye to the pintle hook, and back the dolly under the tail trailer, then make your air and electrical connections.
Once you do it a few times, it becomes easier.JReding Thanks this. -
Just wait until you're in a situation where you have to put the dolly ( single or tandem ) in at a 45 degree angle due to circumstances !!! Single axle dollies are great to maneuver by hand downhill in warm dry weather. It doesn't work so well in ice, snow, or pot holes. Practice ! Practice ! Practice !
Hauling "wiggle wagons" suck at times .... but sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do ....
They're a LOT better then they used to be !!! ........ wait a sec .... where was I going with this ......
Well ..... at least some of the Canucks will get the following ........
