Hi, so I bought a truck. Now need to get a DOT # to run my own IFTA, etc. I do not want an MC #, because I will be running under my leasors operating authority.

    But.
When filling out form MCS-150 for a DOT #, there is a section about operation classification. And I have to choose one or more options like Authorized for-hire, Exempt for-hire or private property. As for my operation under their’s authority, I will be hauling goods for pay Interstate. So as for instructions I should select Authorized for-hire. But that triggers a need for an MC #. How to avoid that?

Should I just choose private property on exempt? I won’t be doing any transportation acrivity under my own authority, so I don’t the MC #, nor the costs associated.

I called FMCSA and explained the situation to the guy, but he just read the questions to me, and said I need an MC #, couldn’t address my issue, of not running under my own authority.

If anyone knows, please help. Thanks.

I always thought that the carrier was to handle this, they collected the taxes and made the payments because they had the interstate authority, not the leasing party.

Since UCR came about, I believe in 2015 it was, I don't think you can get the DOT without the MC.

My question would be, If your going to run your own IFTA and everything...

    Why be leased on?

You can’t get a DOT number anymore. They used to require it for leased operators, now they forbid it.

I have a brand new DOT and MC, and I'm leased on.

You have to have a DOT to get IRP, only reason I got mine.

Ucr is just a new name for single state registration.

You list your leased to motor carrier’s mc and dot on your irp and check the little box that it’s subject to change. If you listed an inactive or worse, bought liability insurance and then cancel it to get your irp, you’re going to be sorry

UCR stands for United Carrier Registration. It means DOT # and MC # at tied together. Its the reason carriers no longer are required to display their MC on the side of the truck.

And yes, you do have to have a DOT number to get an IRP on a truck. The DOT # must be active and in the registrants name.

The MC on the side went away before UCR. You DO NOT need your own DOT/MC to get your own plate. Where do you guys come up with this nonsense

    DieselDrivinDaddy Thanks this.
