First, forgive me for making another drug test post. Yes, I have read them all.

My question comes from a position of ignorance and common sense... Or in this case... lack of common sense.

If I understand correctly.... (and do correct me if I am wrong)

When comparing a DOT drug test to a Non DOT drug test, the former (DOT) actually tests for only 5 chemicals, which is LESS than half of what many drug screens are capable of testing.

If I have read correctly, the DOT and employers in the industry are limited to a lesser test which only screens for 5 different drugs.... Further, am I correct to understand that they are NOT ALLOWED to test beyond the standard 5 panel DOT? Leaving out a multitude of vehicle operating impairing drugs like muscle relaxers, etc.?

What am I missing here? Is this just a matter of saving money?

I've had to submit to far more comprehensive tests just for desk jobs, which have no safety hazards. Well, I guess I could have tripped on a stapler and fell on a pencil...

It just seems a job like this where so much can go wrong if someone is impaired would call for a higher regulation and not a limit as to how much testing is allowed.

I'm not complaining really... Just baffled...

Maybe those who have been around can explain to me why it's like that and how it got to be like that?

    Cheers all,

    DT

My understanding is that the "DOT-5" is more geared towards abused and unlawful drug use as opposed to prescription use. That's why they have a Medical Rep contact you if there's a positive prior to reporting the test as a "positive".

That is my understanding as well. But if I am reading the following correctly-

A DOT drug screen tests a specimen for five drugs—opiates, PCP, amphetamines/methamphetamines, marijuana and cocaine.

It seems as though that a very large amount or RX medication isn't even tested for. In other words if a driver is on Valium, Soma, Xanax, and a few dozen other meds, it will never come up on a test.

it is only my opinion, but i do not think truck drivers are the hazard, it's the 4 wheelers either using cell phones, texting, driving under the influence, or using illegal drugs that are the hazard.

Not on a drug screen testing for opiates. Pain killers, yes.

I think the FMCSA sets a minimum testing standard.........but just as companies ae going beyond the standards for the DOT medical exam, with sleep studies, BMI, Etc.......I would assume many of the better companies, with higher standards, are looking for other drugs in your system as well. If you closely read the paperwork you sign in orientation, they often extend many of the industry standards, especially the companies that hire students, with no commecial driving exp. I would say that they can only report a failed DOT test, if you test for the substances listed..........but that does not mean they will hire you if they find something else in your system they deem not acceptable.

There is a list of prohibited drugs. If you take a DOT drug screen you should list any prescriptions that you take. Some carriers will require you to come off some before they will hire you. And the last thing we need are MORE government regulations. What we have works just fine. There are still those who take or abuse drugs and drive impaired even though there are laws against it. They are eventually caught. The major drug groups are tested and have been refined over the years. There are still those who will have a little MJ over the weekend just before going to orientation and doing a drug test on Monday. :biggrin_2554:

I'm heading out now, but there is some verbage I will have to pull using words like "shall not test for substances other than".

If you have taken any drugs prior to being tested you need to list them when you take your drug screen. If you have been taking illegal drugs prior to going to orientation, you may want to rethink your career decision. There is zero tolerance in this business for illegal drug use.
