I think I know enough about DOT inspections. I'd like to become more familiar with DOT Audits.

From time to time I flex the truth with my logbook, and a couple times in the past (not currently) I have just straight out spit in uncle Sam's face (metaphorically speaking) with my entries on an entire week but its been a long time since I've HAD to do it.

I don't play, I'm pretty good at it. I'm like a reincarnated con artist when I do it, which is why I have never been violated for false logs. I have studied routes, camera systems, interconnected systems between multiple states, weigh station statistics on opening and closing ratios, violation and inspection percentages and lunch/shift change times. I haven't made a false logbook entries for a long time but still would like to know more.

I have even read up on things pertaining to the psychology of your truck and personal appearance, color, cleanliness, body movements and gestures that would trigger suspicions by authorities and prompt an inspection.

Even after being pulled in there are psychological effects on talking to the inspectors a certain way that would draw his/her attention away from your book or your slight air leak or whatever.

I'm just explaining how in-depth I like to be, and with that said........

    I'd like to know..........

What prompts a DOT Audit on a company?

    Are they random?

How are the conducted and how far into logbooks do they look back?

Do they Audit all driver logs at the company or just a couple?

What documents do they compare with to conduct the audit on logbooks?

What are the potential consequences if blatant violations are found in logbook entries past 8 days?

I was once told that Audits only inspect the last 90days of logs at a company. Is this true?

I'm only asking to gain better insight on the matter. I'm not promoting logbook falsification nor am I glorifing it. I think logbook falsifiers are just as bad as terrorist and child molesters and they sicken me. lol

But, I also think that if Audits look back further than 90days, I'll be breaking in to my company in the near future to retrieve those logs.

Or mabey I'll dress up like the cable man and come in 007 style. Idk, lemme know.

it can be a random audit other times your high scores because of too,,any violations/failed,insoections,oos, etc

You're required to keep the last 6 months we keep ours for a whole year. When we got audited one guy checked every log book from every driver and matched it with every fuel receipt. took him three days.

One driver got hit (added a co driver but didn't make a false log book for "that driver") and it was a 500$ fine for him. Obviously they are smarter than we think. this guy was a genius he's been bending companies over for 30some years.
