Trucker Report on this one.....

Why do people blame the dealer for selling a shoddy truck? Why cant they accept the blame to themselves for not checking it out properly? Ever heard of an oil sample, rig dig report, ecm download and blowby test?? I would never touch a truck I was interested in without doing these things first. They wanna be cheap, first off by thinking they are getting the deal of a lifetime, but then wanna blame the dealer cause they cheap out again on investigating to see why its such a good deal. They are right, there is a sucker born every minute.

I ran into a carrier in Nashville when I was renewing my baseplates a couple of years ago. He said that he had purchased several trucks from Baskin and didn't have any problems with them. I think he told me that he had bought over 20 trucks from them. I have head of others who have stated they had problems with trucks that they bought from Don Baskins. I have driven by their lot and they have a huge selection of trucks. I have not had personal experience with them so I can't give you first hand knowledge about the quality of their equipment. Any time you buy a truck from ANYONE, it is your responsibility to check it out for yourself. I don't trust anyone when it comes to buying equipment. You can buy from one of the major dealers or an individual and still get a lemon. Some are truthful and others will lie. I considered buying a truck from them at one time, but never had the time to drive that far to check them out. I know at one time you could buy a truck from them for less than many other places. That could mean that there equipment is not as high quality as others or they decided to make a little less profit in order to have more volume. If you don't know what to look for in a class 8 truck, it would pay you to have someone who is qualified to check it out for you. Buying a class 8 truck is a major purchase. You should spend a few hundred dollars having it checked. A dyno, oil sample and the ecm will give you a good picture of the over all condition of the truck. You could have a mechanic check bushings, king pins and other components. It is money well spent. You don't want to buy a truck and then need to have to spend money on major repairs.

I too am in the market for my first used truck and i am looking at Baskins. Concerning oil samples, i agree they are important. If i have to travel to the dealer, get the sample, send it off and wait for the results, it could take 3 days or more. Is there a faster way of getting same day results on oil samples?

Speedco does oil samples on the spot, when you get an oil change, for a small fee, about $17. I have heard drivers say it's not a good analyses.

You can get an oil analysis the same time you do the dyno. Any authorized truck or engine dealer should be able to do a dyno and oil analysis. They may or may not need to send it off for the oil. I would not go to the expense of doing either until you made a decision on a particular truck. You could make a deal contingent on a good dyno and oil analysis.

From what I gather 90% of everything Don Baskin sells comes straight from the auction, so there is no telling what type of truck you might get. Some good I am sure but probably plenty bad ones to. If you look at some of there adds they still have the Ritchie Brothers auction signs hanging in the windshields.
