Not the most life or death question I know, but if you've got a second here it is:
When I got my truck the air system had been "gone through" (and bastardized a little) and there was a little 1 or 2 gallon tank bolted up next to the air dryer (Meritor Wabco) but it was 1/2 full of water and already d/c'd so I yanked it off & chucked it in the corner of the shop.
Now that I'm getting around to servicing the dryer I've discovered that it was probably a "purge tank" and it just filled up 'cause the filter was bad. Dryer seems to be working fine w/o it, any reason I should hook it back up?
Thanks!
FWIW, the truck is a '99 Oshkosh FF-2146 w/Cummins ISM
Does my Wabco dryer need a purge tank?

I cant be sure you name all parts right, but purge tank, is really dryer regeneration tank. It is small, about a gallon, and when compressor cuts off air from this tank runs in reverce direction from air dryer cartridge, blowing out oil/water emulsion throught the regeneration passage (down to ground).

That little tank would be an aid to your dryer and improve the dryers performance by:
Collecting water and oil that would normally be cycled through the dryer.
Providing air volume at the dryer for the purge cycle.
The addition of the tank would extend dryer service intervals and help prevent dryer freeze up in winter weather.
The tank should be drained daily for maximum efficiency.
The tank isn't necessary, but a good addition if regularly tended to.Wesco Thanks this. -
OK, thanks for the responses; when I get a minute I'll bolt it back on.
Y'all are great!
