Im a young man and currently stay at home even know im mostly never there because i drive otr and sometimes like to stay out longer than two weeks. I hate saying i stay at home because when people hear that the assumptions start going i know it whether they say something or not.
I helped my mother become a home owner by helping her get what was rightfully hers. I worked to figure out how to legally remove squatters only to find they left the house trashed, ran up unpaid property tax and utilities and stole pipes.
I paid 5k in back taxes and put in new drywall a new furnance and water heater. I also got pvc to replace plumbing.
Besides all that im looking for my own place but feel buying a home is better than renting.
I feel like renting and even a mortgage is such a waste since im never home how much would i really enjoy it.
Plus i still have plans in the air about going back to school so im in a tight spot and fork in the road on decisions. I would work on buying a home but if i go back to school i probably wouldn't be able to keep up with a mortgage.
I thought about putting my few things in storage and just staying in the truck and getting a hotel for time in my home city or to visit family. Any advice? Anybody else just stay in their truck.
Does anybody live in their truck.

I started in this racket nearly 30 years ago... You like your mom? Visit her on your days off. Don't like her cooking, get a Hotel room. Meanwhile, bank your money and no big purchases. Living with your mother/parents is not that big of a deal in this racket, and it sounds like you are doing right by her and taking care of the finances. Don't let peer pressure ruin your future. Do this, and you can pay cash for a house.

I know a guy that did just that. He was single and quite a few bills (including back child support payments) and hit the road about 7 years ago.
His mom lives in Atlanta, dad & siblings live in Brooklyn. He would stay out for weeks at a time, visit and stay with his for a few days and dad & siblings other times.
He was able to pay off all his debt and bank over 50k, plus 401k contributions. He now is working a regional position, has his own place in Atlanta now and is happy as a lark.Suspect Zero, Just passing by and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
Been living in my companies western star with a 44 inch sleeper for the past two months.
I was staying with friends but the drive into town was getting old , easier to just stay in the truck on my days off
I just bought my own semi truck so I could deck it out the way it needs to be,after living in this one for two months I know how it needs to be setup. but I’m pretty comfortable in this oneLast edited: Sep 1, 2018

When people make fun of living with your mom ask them what they made last year. No more than you are home it's the smart thing to do.

Just remember, your mom ain’t going to clean the inside of your truck.
Some garbage dumpsters are cleaner than some of these trucks! -

Your mortgage is a certain amount each month. Multiply by 12. Double it into savings. That way you will be a year ahead in mortgage with savings for another year. OR given half the time of term you will be mortgage free in half the 15 years or whatever. We were clear in 6 years, Trucking provided that last kick to pay them off in 4 months. Poof paid. -
Here is what I would do.
But a home or a rental property, hand it over to a management company, have them rent it out and take care of it.
Run your truck and stay with your mom when in town. If you are close with your mom I doubt she’s going to say no.
Do your thing for a while or as long as you can. When time comes to retire, your home is already paid off and you have a nice savings account.
If able to purchase a second home or property to rent it out then this becomes a source of income while retired.
Think of the bigger picture.
I’m on that mission now. Already own my own home now, technically bank owns it until it is paid off but I’m working towards purchasing my first 4 unit complex. If I can do this for 20 years I’ll be set.
A retired income of 2-3k a month per 4 unit complex is not bad. Depending on how many I am able to purchase in the next 20 years and if my home is paid off or not including the properties.
For the next 20 years i will be a very stingy person. Save every nickel and dime and live out of my truck when I’m on the road.joey8686 and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
Many drivers live in the truck. I met one guy that had been living in a truck for 7 years and loved the life. He was banking lots of money every year.
