With only 2 years as an O/O I am fairly new to this world after being a company driver for the previous 4 years. I am making decent money and have no complaints so far as I have had no major repair costs on my truck, which is a 2007 Freightliner Columbia with a Detroit 60 series engine and has about 410k miles.
I have my PM service done at the 17k-20k mile range.
My question is... Do any of these oil or fuel additives make a difference?
I see all types in the truckstops such as HOWES MEANER KLEANER, which "guarantees" a 5% increase in MPG, or MOTORKOTE oil additive that is about $80 for a gallon jug.
LUCAS has several fuel and Oil additives as well.
Are these just a waste of money that do nothing for your truck's performance? Or are they worth buying?
Do any of you old time O/O out there use any of this stuff?

I swear by Lucas in the oil. I perfer FPPF for the fuel, However Lucas makes an excellent product as well just a bit more expensive. Running the Lucas oil treatment I have never personally has an oil related failure and in my opinion it decreases friction by maintaining the critical oil film between moving components.

Ask your mechanic. I have asked several Cummins employees, I run a 99-classic with a 15 speed behind an N14+. Everyone of them say no advantage. I think if they gave you an increase in anything the major companies would add the chemicals originally. It would be to their marketing advantage. With that said, using synthetic oils instead of mineral oils is better for your equipment, including the motor. Everyone that uses them will have a reason. Everyone who doesn't use them will have a reason. Good luck.

I use fuel treatment about once a month, been doing so for years. Never had a fuel related problem.Seems to help when I have to use lesser grade fuel . Lucas in hubs, no bearing failures. Lucas in engine in hot summer months, no engine malfunctions.
I believe the addistives are worth it.

Ask yourself why the major oil companies don't sell their own version of these products. Or why not the engine companies? They all have their own oil, also have their own antifreeze, but none of them sell Oil or fuel additive.

    Planned obsolescence.

No reason to make a truck that runs 'forever'. No reason to make one run 20 years, either. Have it run just long enough that you pay it off, get some years out of it, and have to get a new one or a major overhaul.

No different than whether to double-clutch or float. The factory stands behind double-clutching, but the floaters out there know that clutch wear is greatly reduced if you float it properly.

I'm sure the brake manufacturers are against coasting to slow down as well.

Are they worth it? Sure, for the companies that are selling the products.

The truck that I sold in December went to one million miles before it needed an overhaul, was very clean inside, original turbos and injectors. The transmission and the rear ends now have 1.4 million on them, neither has ever been opened up, truck has only ever had one wheel seal that needed to be replaced, all original wheel bearings. I have never found any documented proof that any of the mentioned additives are worth the money for the consumer.

The use of Fuel and Oil additives are worth it and very important to the transportation industry.

Lucas is what I perfer in oil and fuel additives. Lucas makes an excellent product. Running the Lucas oil treatment is a must to prevent any oil related failure and component damage.

You need a fuel additives and do not want your fuel pump to ever run dry, or your done.
