I'm not new but I don't understand the system.

If I was pulled into the scale and got some violations ( no fines or not Out of Service's ) how does that affect me?

Does it matter if it was a vehicle violation or a driver violation ?

All violations will give you points. Some have more weight than others but after so long they eventually fall off. What affects you is if you too many violations over a 3 year span. Then you won't be able to drive.

Also, if your CSA Score is too high, there are some companies that won't hire you, Magnum comes to mind as one of those companies.

SOOO basically having violations on your record might not let you work for a company ?

What about driver violations for the company, if I am reading it correct there's a CHANCE you might get higher insurance or a CHANCE you might not get hired for loads.

Correct....some companies look at prospective drivers CSA Score. I mentioned Magnum because they turned me down for that reason some years ago. They want a score below 30. Mine was 40 I believe. It was my fault I stayed working for a cheap owner way too long while trying to clean up other issues.

As for the loads, that's accurate too. If a driver(o/o) and/or company has too high of a score the insurance will skyrocket, and it will also be difficult to get loads. The aforementioned owner that I worked for, that happened to him more and more. He couldn't book with Landstar, BNSF, or other brokers that pay tinely either.

The answer to the question about getting an inspection with violations AND NO state citations AND NO OOS order WILL NOT affect you in the general sense. However, it can have a negative effect if you are already borderline with a history of violations. Think of it this way. The more you get "dinged" over time the "options" you have for employment get smaller. There is a lot of leeway in regard to the CSA system. An occasional violation (once every few years) is not anything to worry about. JUST KEEP IT THAT WAY!

Your FCMSA Pre-employment Screening Program [PSP] history does not assign you points; it does show any points issued to your company as the result of violations found during an inspection you received; as well as, the accidents that made it into the FCMSA safety management system [a lot don't get there] for a set amount of time.

There are outside services that monitor the company history and report the points per driver but the FCMSA does not 'assign you points'...

Some companies attempt to, proactively, eliminate risks by not hiring any individuals who are outside their 'ideal' parameters in an attempt to hire 'safer', possibly to seek lower isurance costs. The more bean counters and the less ex drivers in upper management the more of this you will find.

Reality is different; 15 years in operations,5 years in management and over 20 years in safety and I can say that every place I've worked has a similar number of incidents each year.

All varied by location and operational conditions.

The first multi-location company I worked as safety director had a unique setup where there was zero deductibles so every little thing like a wind blown door peeling a little piece of trim wood off the dock door frame, etc. was reported.

First 3 years at 9 locations we hired 167, 166, 165 port owner operators to maintain a roster of165 units. Not every guy turned over but some loctions experienced a turnover rate well above 100%.

That is a lot of 'new' individuals yet the company totaled around 65 insurance claims every year.

No they don't. They give the company CSA points. There are no points associated with the driver. That said, they are listed on the driver's PSP report.

Correct. PSP is typically pull for prospective hires and gone over. If there is a pattern then the company may pass on you.
