Well me and my friend have been arguing about if most big rigs have turbo chargers, he says almost no big rigs have turbo and they only have it if they installed it themselfs, I told him that alot of diesel engines have turbo chargers and most of them do have them.

So do most big rigs have turbo chargers? If so do you have a guesstimate of what percentage?

    Thanks!

The old ones have superchargers, but you won't find a big truck without a power adder unless you go WAYYYYY back! My pops went to Detroit Supercharger School in ... oh, 1961 or so... Back when 2-strokes were still used alot. I don't think they've used a 2-stroke since 1978. heh...

The 2 stroke was produced until recently, maybe still is for export use, they worked good for marine use where the load was fairly constant. The introduction of the Series 60 Detroit 4 stroke, marked the beginning of the end for the 2 stroke in OTR. Cummins and Cat and Detroit were always the big 3 in this country. The big 2 strokes were also turbocharged and after cooled. I haven't seen a non turbo 4 stroke since the mid seventies, when Cummins was adding them to older motors to cut smoke, calling it a smoke kit.

I'm not forgetting Mack, but even they used the Signature 600 and KTAs before that in their Titan and earlier super duty tractors and trucks. The Mack V-8 is now mostly a memory.

Most of the older Volvos had Cummins, Detroit, or even a Cat between the frame rails. Most all of them were equipped with turbos.

In about 1969, Cummins turbo-charged their 855 cubic inch diesel. The horsepower increased from 250 hp to 270 hp. I assume changes were also made to the cam and injectors.

Two-cycle Detroit Diesel engines used a gear driven Roots supercharger. There are great advantages to using a roots-style supercharger to create horsepower. Instant power comes right off idle thanks to its ability to develop boost at lower engine rpm.

Detroit also put on a turbocharger on top of that blower some years ago.

They are still around though. I ran a forklift a few days ago that had a 471 in it.

Not necessarily. You may find one here or there with an 8.2 liter. Those don't have turbos, and are V-8 four-strokes.
