Do companies reimburse you for paying for CDL school if you paid with a check?

I am planning on paying for myself to go to a private trucking school so I don't have to be stuck with one company for a set amount of time. The school I am planning on going to costs about $6,000. There is another school I am looking into and it costs about $4000, I'm not sure which one I am going to choose yet. My question is about companies, specifically Schneider National reimbursing you for CDL training. On their website, it says they will pay you up to $6000 for the training IF you take out a loan. I don't plan on taking out a loan, I plan on writing a check or paying cash. Will the companies (Schneider) still reimburse me or do they only do that if you take out a loan to pay for the training? Please, any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Edit: The schools I am looking into are Trainco Truck Driving School, in Norwalk, Ohio and Great Lakes Truck Driving School. If you can tell me about either one of these schools, that would also be very helpful for me. Thanks again!

Thank you! Would you recommend me to go to a company sponsored training like Swift or Roehl or go to a private school? Will companies reimburse me if I pay for my own training?

i'm not real sure how it works, but it sounds to me like the 12 months working for a company after the train you is what i've heard called Return Of Service or ROS. the company is recouping their training costs by having you work a certain amount of time. if i was you, i'd make real sure that any company offering to reimburse your training costs doesn't have a clause in there somewhere in the fine print, locking you in to a set period, to get their money back. if you have to do ROS for them training you, it would make sense that you'd have to do ROS for them covering the cost of your training somewhere else.

Either or, They should pay you back for it, they may have a limit like the $6000.00 for School looks a little high. But they may reimburse you up to an amount. Like Chinatown stated, Watkins and Shepard would be a good fit for you where you are, they pay good stop pay and you are in a 10 day Orientation/Training session/Interview and then out you go, Be sure wherever you go, That they are an accredited school, if you contact W & S call them and ask them whichh scools in your area do they approve of? I hope this helps.

Keep in mind that once you hire on with a company that does reimburse you for your school that, if for any reason you decide to leave before they have paid off your school, typically you won't get anything from the next company. I would not let that deter you from getting away from a really truly crappy employer though, a man has to do what a man has to do. When I came out of CDL school (Owens C.C. which has actually partnered with Trainco now) back in 1997, TMC offered reimbursement and I went through their training program. My trainer cut me loose a bit early and I was supposed to get my own truck and start on my own.... Well a few phone calls later I was told that I had 2 choices. Come back to Des Moines and wait on a TMC truck, work around the yard for $7.50/hr, (of course no time frame given when I'd get my truck, it could be 3 days it could be 3 weeks) or I could run for a week with a regional trainer and work for Shamrock (their regional operation at the time). I ran the week with Shamrock and decided that $500 gross/week wasn't enough for running Detroit to Chicago area all week so I jumped ship and hired on with an environmental services company that was local and paid way better than $500/week. Yes I lost any reimbursement BUT, I made up for it and then some with the higher pay.

i had no prob with Schneider (bulk) reimbursing me, and I paid for school upfront. However, they only pay $150/mo, so if you quit, you only get what's already paid. But if you're quitting, chances are the pay and/or other benefits will more than make up for the diff.

As for your school question, I went to Great Lakes, but I don't know anything about the other you mentioned. I had a great time there and learned a lot. If you're a shy type, or cant handle yourself around old schoolers, it might be a little rough. If you can handle it, and can bust their nutz when they bust yours, AND you're not into this new age politically correct crap, you'll have a blast.

    Good luck!

That's way too much. CDL school should cost you no more than $1,500-$1,800.
