Hello & hello. I've heard that the coolant needs to be drained, and that a special 5/8 span wrench will be needed. Any other useful tips? This will put my skills to the test and will probably be the "biggest" job I've done myself. The savings would be about $1100 in labor. ----Is there a special type of thread sealant to use when putting bolts back in? Will bolts break coming off? ( I found Kroil oil for seized bolts and got some) ____this job looks like there will be some cussin' and Knuckle bustin'
The air compressor is passing a little oil but not enough to notice when draining the air tanks. There's no oil in the intake side, output only. The oil pump is leaking where the power steering meets & where the pick up tube meets the oil pump. Bot work really good, the air builds good, and oil pressure is fine... Don't really want to replace them but I figured now might be a good time since oil is starting to get through the compressor and they are both orginal at about 900k on them...
Any thoughts or opinions on this matter? Thanks in advance, safe trails.

Are you asking about the pump that runs your power/steering?
HopeOverMope Thanks this. -
It sounds easy but I can tell you, if you get stuck you may not worry about the $1100 to get it fixed right.

If your talking about the engine oil pump be nice or you'll break the oil pick up tube supports inside and will cost you later.

Do you know if the pick up tube, the side attatched to the pump, can be serviced? That's where mine needs to be serviced... -
There used to be an external filter that mounted remotely on the compressor to catch oil to stop the oil. If the flow isn't that bad I wouldn't bother. Drain tanks daily and make sure drier is serviced. Not a hard job, but that wrench is a must to get the rear bolt.

Coolant needs to drain down. Shouldn't have to drain it all. Pump comes off as one piece.
If you do it be sure to check the rocker box for leaks behind the compressorHopeOverMope Thanks this. -

Before you pull the compressor, take the intake hose off. Some had a foam filter that will get stopped up,if it has one remove it and run it a few minutes with the outlet off.
Place a white rag or your hand at outlet and see how it looks.HopeOverMope Thanks this. -
Would you recommend painting the oil pump and the power steering pump first? The new transfer tube I have is painted red all ready, which is fine. But I'm concerned if I don't paint the pumps that they'll rust over pretty quickly
Any thoughts or advice on this? Paint types, paint with a primer color first ...?
I have some of that Cummins red allready from the dealerLast edited: Jan 3, 2017

Does anybody know about when putting the power steering pump back on to the oil pump, what the "sleeve" looks like to connect the two gears & the right way to put in on / secure it?.
My local tech told me it was a sleeve and it probably fell off taking one of the pumps off.
I did find a cylinder shaped piece that fell out of the oil pump and I think it's it,,
But here's the picture of the pieces it's supposed to connect, folks who've done this before I know probably wouldn't need the picture
Thanks in advance
