Is it better to just shoot straight up I-15 or take state roads 41/55. I am heavy with potatoes and just want whats quicker. Never been on that stretch of 15, so I dont want 80 miles of 30 mph crawl hills.
dillon, mt to bozeman, mt which way?

Route 41 and 55 from Dillon and I-90 East to Bozeman was always a nice ride in the summer. Pretty flat along 41 and 55. Since the temps are well above freezing in the area now, there shouldn't be a problem with ice on the roads. It is over 30 miles shorter this way than taking I-15 to I-90 East.
Safe travels. Watch out for wildlife on 41/55 if traveling in the dark.loose_leafs and xlsdraw Thank this. -
It's supposed to snow all night. Take 15-90. I've learned that when winter hits Montana, you save time by sticking to where the plows are.

Montana road reports show Route 41/55 from Dillon to I-90 and over to Bozeman as dry right now. However, East of Butte on I-90 it shows a 10 mile stretch over Homestake Pass with ice on the road. Homestake Pass is also a Continental Divide. By taking the flat roads of Route 41/55 up to I-90, you come out East of Butte and Homestake Pass.
loose_leafs, not sure what experience you have in this part of Montana, but Homestake Pass (I always referred to it as Pipestone) is a long climb and a steep downgrade. Adding ice to the equation does not help. The weather is currently very good along the route I suggested. If you were leaving soon, you will be fine. Lower elevations not as prone to the quick snow accumulation like on the mountain passes. It is in the 40's in Dillon right now. Going up I-15 and then East on I-90 will have a lot of steep pulls and downgrades.

I have a house near Silver Star. A beautiful drive and lots of critters. 41/55 tends to not get much snow.

I drive almost exclusively in Montana and I would take 41/55 and miss homestake all together. You only have one hill between white hall and three forks. After that you are golden. I just came through from Billings to Helena and roads are dry with the exception of Bozeman pass but west of bozeman the sun was out as of about 5:30 pm
-
I just went over homesteak also, it was dry as a bone. So was I 15. Supposed to start snowing anytime though
-
I stand corrected lol. I ran homestake as well today and in my opinion it's one of the easiest passes in the northwest especially east bound, with the exception of the ridiculous low speed limit. But if 41/55 is dry, more power to ya.

good info to know though for future reference, thanks everyone!
