What is the difference in the two models. I have one truck that is geared too low for what it does, and one that could be geared lower for what it does. Just wondering if it would be possible to put 402's in a truck that had 404's and vise versa.

No parts are interchangeable. If you want to swap it has to be the entire housing hub to hub.

    kwforage Thanks this.

Might want to double check that. My gear guy says 380,402,404,405 and dsp 40 are all interchangeable to the housing. 380 requires different axle shafts. The parts that make up the 3rd member are different but the assembly is interchangeable.

If they are interchangeable, diff locks on one and not the other will be a challenge. I installed ds 404's in my dsp 40 housings so I know for a FACT.... that those 2 are interchangeable.

    Oxbow and kwforage Thank this.

So I double checked and your gear guy is wrong the 344 404 405 and 454 as well as the 40 41 44 share the same housing. There might be one more. If you look at the housing you can visibly see a difference. The 340 341 380 381 400 401 402 403 and 451 share the same. No parts interchange except the spindle nuts have the same part number. Just happened to to have both service and parts manuals in the garage.

    kwforage Thanks this.

I went and did some research on the web. Found a Eaton Bulletin on the web. The rear ends look like they will not interchange into the same housings. Also said they went From SAE to Metric threads. If I am wrong, please correct me.

That's what I said nothing crosses except for the spindle nuts.
