What are the differences between the 379 and 389? I know one major difference is the headlights. Other than that, I don't see that much of a difference between the two models. I love both trucks.

none really... just the headlights and on most factory trucks the fatter stack, dash is the same in both trucks so really nothing

To start with the BBC of the 389 is 4" longer than the extended hood 379. Every piece of the hood is different. The 389 has longer springs on the steer axle and different frame horns and bumpers. The cabs seem to be the same as the 2006 and later 379's, but they are mounted slightly higher on the frame. They also use the same radiator as KW now.

389's hood is also alittle longer, the biggest difference is what you can't see. The fatter stacks that hawkjr was refering to is part of the pollution system. That's that Regen system ,with the filter that's about $4,000 (just for the part) when it cracks or gets plugged up. Not to mention it drops your fuel mileage by a bunch, always regenerating. The newer ones are now using DEF. (Anyone notice how many 389's have the DEF tank on the passenger side? Good thinking.) They had to warm over the 389's appearance to get anyone to buy them, most people had alot of questions about buying anything newer than an '07.

The headlights, the ventless windows, and the grill is more rounder at the edges, the 06-07 379s had the ventless windows though

I don't know why Peterbilt puts the DEF tank on the passenger side. Kenworth beats them in competition for that.
-
You can get the def tank on whatever side you spec, I'm driving a 2012 388 with the tank on the drivers side.
-
I know, I've seen them on both sides. Talking to a guy out of Canada. He had a Teal Green 389 (really nice). It was a company truck that someone had put the tank on the pass. side. He said as nice as the truck looks, he hated the deal with pulling into the fuel islands the wrong direction. Says he's not too popular sometimes.
