Review of Diesel Driver School Student Daily Report

    Day 1

Orientation,- discussed the class , fill out paper work for the school

And did payment’s, we discussed trucking industry , we went and did our drug test ,

They tell you they teach to the test and only to the test as this is a 2 week class

    DAY 2

Got split up into smaller groups 4 to each group. Not the two to a truck I was told ,

Went out to the yard and worked on pretrip in the morning, after break we started our straight line backing until lunch , after lunch we went out and did pretest and made a trip up the interstate and did , ramp on and ramp off . Until after noon break, after break we went out on the road again with pretrip and air break practice and we went 30 min each , one screw up took longer so I never had a chance to get behind the wheel for the second time ,

One student when we switched drivers jumped out of the truck and was told to get back in, he said I have to pee , instructor said you cant pee on the interstate I could lose my instructors license , the guy did anyway on the truck tires ,, what a dumb ###

, Then after classes WH-Trucking lady recruiter came in and did her spiel, I of course had many questions for her,

After every one left I asked, her more questions and she told me the bad thing on this place is if you miss a exit and have to run out of your way to get back on track ( lets say 40 miles to get back on track ) they charge you $ 1,40 per mile that you deviated from the route

    Day 3 (Wednesday )

We were out running laps all day ramp on ramp off

From hwy VV to Columbus exit

    Day 4 (Thursday)

We ran dbl laps, then in the after noon we drove threw Columbus

Of course our weak driver in the middle of town with possible hazards

( mom with baby carriage with 3 year old in hand crossing side street , car exiting from drive way on left , and one waiting on right , with another school truck coming towards us in opposite lane , so what’s he do ,,,,, he lay’s on the air horn and waves at the other truck , ) what a dumb ### , at that point he forgot how to drive killed truck 5 times at one stop sign , could not find gears , so after he got around the track well he got more time driving the rest of us sat in the back ,

    1.5 drive time

Day 5 , we had class videos it explained the health rules , and went over log books we was let out at 10;20 am for the week end .

( oh dumb ### didn’t show up for class until 8am class started at 6 am )

he missed 2 roll call’s and missed 2 hours of class this week yet he got the most driving time of any one ,

At the end of the week I find myself disappointed in the drive time allotted to each student unless you’re a dumb ###, then you get more drive time,

    DAY 6 (Monday)

Drove industrial park in the morning, straight line after lunch

    Angle backing rest of day

    Day 7 (Tuesday)

Drove and got fuel this morning, straight up interstate then went to town to drive down town , I got two runs in town

Tomorrow school testing one on one road test

    Day 8 (Wednesday)

First thing SWIFT recruiter came in

Today we did our testing at the school, we had written test’s along with pretrip and road test

I passed all of the school tests today with a 99 %

    Day 9 (Thursday)

On my pretrip this morning I found a fuel leak, and a small coolant leak .

Our truck went out of service, so we had a different truck this morning

Took one trip around town, road test tomorrow morning we meet at school at 5;30 am

They passed out a sheet of paper stating if you don’t pass you can get another week of schooling free with free hotel,

my instructor said if you fail road test ,,, you will know what to expect next time so it would be good experience ,

This statement set me back in my seat as I don’t want to fail any thing I want to learn the right way I told him,,,

We might have to take it in the new truck (new to us)

Oh up date on the dumb ### he fail to show up today

As he passed the schooling,, so he figured he was done

But roomer has it they failed him on disciplinary reasons and was taken to the bus station

    Day 10 (FRIDAY THE 13th)

After a long night of worries as our little town was evacuated due to flooding, reports of my valley flooding, sitting in hotel watching the clouds spinning above head,

Had to be at school at 5;30 am to meet the examiner for my road test ,

Morning came early for some reason,

We had 3 to test from our group and there was discussion on who would go first

I said my towns flooded and I have damage at home I have to go,

The kid said I have to go because I might have but haven’t heard any thing and Chad never said a word so I could see it might be a problem so I took charge, I said Chad you go first you live the farthest away, jerry you go next as you wine the most and I will bring up the tail, first two boys went and they passed, I went last, now let me paint the picture for you, interstate was closed due to flooding and a accident hwy 151 was closed due to high water, all traffic was rerouted threw portage on hwy 51 ,, well portage is where we took our test , it took 15 min to get a opening to take a right hand turn , nice strong spring on the clutch ,hwy 39 closed so every thing was routed threw the the down town with one lane road construction , , as car’s cutting in front of you , if you had 30 feet in front of your truck ,, road rage drivers flipping off every one , I got honked at a few times LOL slow and steady , I told the examiner deduct all the points you want but im not pushing it , for some reason it was very hot in the truck ,,,

Needless to say it was crazy out there, but all went relatively well considering and I passed my test with room to spare,

3.5 hours later I made the hour trip home I found a few roads open to get to the house,

    But that’s another story

SATERDAY morning as I finish up this letter

Over all on this school, it is a CDL MILL even the 4 week class as I spoke with the students is not much different between the classes,

If you go to this school you better be a fast learner as they cover a subject once, some they hand you a paper to study, you ask a question they answer it but if you ask them to show you some thing that isn’t pertaining to the CDL test, you will get, you will learn that from the place you go to work,

So if you have a slow learner in your truck you lose seat time,

If your tired you will not retain the brief description of the subject at hand

Recommendation from me is this is a very expensive school for what training you will actually get, you better not be sleeping when some on else is driving as that’s when you hear some thing new,,

This school would be good for a refresher course, but to expensive for new drivers Sub standard training in my opinion,

I feel I have learned enough to be dangerous even though I have passed my test, much more to learn, its not a confidence builder

This is my true feeling on this hope this helps

well i might have to change things on here i find i learn'd more than i put out ,
as you all know Iowa and Wisconsin is under duress with the flooding ,
i live out side of a small town called avoca WI , it was in the news ,,, it was flooded out and evacuated for the most part ,, well i have been in helping out in town yesterday and today , today i told them i had a class A , and they said good , 15 min later i was in a tanker driving in this small town ,
i found out i know more than i thought ,,,i didn't miss a gear i went slow i took 7 loads from town to the lake to empty out ,hit the turn around with out a rub , came out, backed in next to all the trucks with out a pull up , emptied my load of water and back to town i went , over all i find that its easier to drive a normal truck than the sloppy training trucks at the school , these trucks shift very nice tight pattern and 1300 low 1400 high, 400 bump on down shifting , smooth as silk ,,,, went off with out a hitch ,, so i might of over reacted when i did my summery of the school
i have more confidence now , and i was asked if i was coming back tomorrow , and i said yes and the chef said good i did well today ,,

after the day was done i told him the ink wasn't dry on my lic, yet he looked surprised and said he could not tell

so i have to wright this as i fine my instructor's training sunk in more than i ever realized

fema / red cross / and the national guard MP's hummers every where
and cops and more cops , nicest guys/ gal's you ever want to talk to every one of them ,

there was 2 big tankers 2 small 3000 gal , tankers and fire trucks i still don't know how many of them there was , but they empty out in 1;25 seconds

I really don't like how you make fun of the slow learner. Frankly its distasteful. Not everyone catches on quickly and I was slow to learn the gears and stop stalling the truck out. Quit being so judgmental.

if you fallowed it its not all about the slow learner ,,,,,,,,,,,

its the fact that out of a 10 day training

the guy missed 12 roll calls out of 28
the guy gets out of the truck wile switching drivers and pee on the tires on the interstate ,wile the instructor telling him NO i can lose my instructors licence
the guy that missed day and a half of school
the guy that screams aaYA_HOO from the back seat wile some one else was driving
the guy that didn't study any thing
the guy that reverted back and could not remember what was said a hour earlier

so he took seat time off other students because he was a idiot

now if you fall in to this category and did every thing this guy did during school well oh well get over it ,

now the women that was having trouble in class or driving i was trying to help them ,,, i never put them down not once , i was always positive with them trying to help ,

it has nothing to do about slow learning ,,
its about not trying , and not knowing what your doing is WRONG unacceptable behaviour

its obvious this guy did way to many drugs in his life that affected his brain ,

i have little over 40 hours in driving a tanker at our small town due to the flooding since passing my road test friday ,

Hey Mark. One thing people have to understand going into this program is that this is a CDL school. Not a full truck driving school. You had stated CDL Mill. That is hitting the nail on the head. I took their program in March of 2007. Knowing what i know now, i would have saved my $3700+/- and hopped in a truck with a guy for a week then went to a local testing place, paid the $250 to test in their truck, and been done with it. At Least i would have had some real life experience.

I caught on really quickly, coming from a farming background. Not everyone else did the same. We had one of those idiots in our group. He ended up getting kicked out for failing a random UA. Most of the other guys grasped the concept of what was supposed to happen, and the ones that didn't got the help that they needed from the class participants. We understood that we weren't going to get the help we needed from the instructors, so we stepped up and helped the stragglers.

I would say that if you are looking to get your cdl in a hurry so you can get going with a large company that offers a training program and tuition reimbursement, this is a great school. I passed the school exams with 100% accuracy. When i took the road test, I drove that truck flawlessly, with one exception. When i was accelerating, shifting through the gears, i forgot to flip the selector into high range. I ground the gears twice, flipped and proceeded. After the test had completed, the instructor told me that normally he wouldn't have deducted for the double grind because i took care of it right away, but he didn't want me to get a perfect score, so he docked me a point for the occurrence.

I tested on Saturday, applied to Werner Ent. on Sunday, and Monday night i was on a bus to Omaha, NE. That was the beginning of April. By July I had completed the "Train The Trainer" program and was taking on my own students. I ran with Werner until the end of 2008, in which i made $158k that year. I purchased my own truck and leased it on towards the end of the year, Werner charged me for a tow bill for dragging their trailer out of the ditch when their student driver took the corner too short, and i quit. Went with a small, local company, lost my ###, and gave the truck back to Freightliner. Live and learn.

Now I'm enrolled at cvtc for the Diesel and Heavy Equip tech program.

I agree with Marks opinion, we had a guy that thought he was there to meet girls needless to say he flunked out. The cost is high. I learned more in a week of orientation at the company I went to work for then I did in school.

Old thread but I went through the 4 week course back in November 04. Whether or not it's worth it depends on your individual situation but they do what they have to do to get you a CDL quicker than anyone else. That's what was important to me when I went. I was only 18 so I couldn't sign on with any OTR companies but at the time I was working landscaping and wanted to get it before snowfall so I could run the big trucks when plowing and knew that once I was 21 I wanted to drive.

    desperado75 Thanks this.
