I am guessing you havent been thru a trucking school. the one i went to,we had to memorize the pre trip and we did this by the instructor pointing to the part, naming it and then telling us what we were checking it for. we did this every day that we were there so by the end of school, we knew it by heart.in va where it passed my test, you could only say certain words when telling the tester about the part, but like i said before our instuctor knew that and had us say it like the tester wanted.

Grab someone who knows what the parts are and go out to the truck you'll be testing on if at all possible. The school I'm at has two 2003 freightliners with mercedes engines, yet they are very different from each other and the caterpillar enginge that I had in my last truck. The locking jaws handle releases differntly, the air compressor and air conditioners are in differnt locations.

If you can practice doing the pretrip EVERY day on the truck that you will test in you shouldn't need a cheat sheet to pass the test (but it sure would help you ace it). Nothing beats actually putting your hand on the parts to remember what they are.

You are right it is funny (strange) that if it is that important they would have a checklist and you go down and check it off as you do it. That way there is no way of forgetting anything.

I just got my Temporary license after studying a couple days at school. Instructor said this weekend have to study Pre-trips. Found useful link- just copy the pages to your computer for study- has mouse rollovers for parts in photos, and sample dialogue: www.pre-trip.net

The Oklahoma CDL book has the list written down by "sections" of the truck (i.e. front right, right, back right...), and they mentioned in the book that they recommended priniting that page and use it always so you don't miss anything. http://www.dps.state.ok.us/dls/okdm.html
