Quick question: did any of the EPA07 Detroit Series 60 DDEC VI engines get made without a VPOD?
ESN is 06R994171 or something.
The same FL dealer in Montreal that found the proper engine sensor harness when nobody else could told me that my engine doesn't have a VPOD!
Now I don't know what else to change to get better fuel economy. Currently averaging 5.5 with an inframe just done, overhead twice and new sensors and engine sensor wiring harness.
Detroit Series 60 DDEC 6 - NO VPOD?

DDEC VI series 60 does not use a vpod. It uses an electronic vgt actuator on the turbo.
Swine hauler and Hulld Thank this. -
Thank you Quality Truck. You have replied to a lot of my posts about about my DDEC 6 Detroit. Too bad I'm so far away or I'd drop by Detroit and have you look at my truck.
I'm still getting terrible fuel economy and the VPOD was one of my last hopes. You see, I've had an in-frame done, the valves adjusted twice and I just changed all of the sensors on the engine, along with the engine sensor wiring harness. At least now the truck will stay on high idle before it wouldn't. The random J1939 codes are gone but I'm getting a new code. ECM 128, PID 103, Fail 01. Turbo speed sensor speed low. I saw that you replied to another post that this means a bad delete. I even had it dynoed. 517 hp to the wheels and 1847 ft-lbs of torque.
I did find a small hole in the silicon boot from the turbo to the intercooler. Changing that increased my fuel economy from 4.4 to 5.5 mpg.
Any ideas as to how to get another 1 mpg? The truck pulls badly to the right but I need to change the springs and king pins and get a 5 axle alignment done but would the bad alignment cause such low mpg? -
One more thing. After I changed the turbo boost sensor, I could hear the turbo. I sounded like crickets but at Alvin the Chipmunk speed. 1 day later, the turbo went quiet again.
I did have a leakdown test done on the CAC. 1 psi of pressure loss. Turbo sweep test showed that the turbo is working properly and an injector cutout test showed that all of the injectors are working properly.
Is 5.5 mpg really the best milage that's possible ouf of a Detroit Series 60? I thought these were supposed to be great engines.....Last edited: Apr 19, 2020

They WERE great engines until 2007 when the gov't forced DD to destroy an almost perfect design. 5.5 isn't the worst that I've heard, by far not the best either. Try running injector cut out test this way. Let engine run on one cylinder at a time by cutting out other 5. Engine should run, albeit crappy, for at least 5-7 seconds and not shut off. The E3 injectors that they used sucked. Again I lean towards the delete....

@QUALITYTRUCK: Thanks again for your insight. It is much appreciated.
So, what is the best mpg that these DDEC 6 engines can achieve?
Other guys in the fleet are getting 8 mpg while the best I can manage is 5.5. I know the ECM has been hacked because when I discovered the hole in the boot, I took the clamps off so I could turn the hose and see how big the hole was. Instead one of the clamps broke. Not having a spare clamp, that broken clamp came off and so did the turbo hose. I limped along for the next 100 miles to the dealer but the whole time not a single warning or CEL. Took 3 hours though.
If the DDEC 5 engines are that much better on fuel and I could get 7.5 mpg, I will swap the head from a DDEC 5 engine.
Will that work?
I know that both engines are 14L but will my compression ratio change? I know that they both use the compact gear train but the fuel return line is different.
Are the pinouts for the 2 injector harness the same between DDEC 5 and 6? If so, then I should be able to use a DDEC 5 injector harness. Or if the injector connectors are the same, then I should be able to use the factory DDEC 6 injector harness.
Any reason why swapping heads won't work? I do have a reman cylinder head but if 6.x is the best I can hope for, then more drastic measures are needed.
I can't sell my truck because I'm too deep in the red with all of the repairs that I've done to it.
Looking forward to your reply. -
dd5 and dd6 use the same injectors not sure what changing the head out is going to do you need to delete that garbage turbo and have the ecm tuned
-
They do not use same injectors. DDEC 5 uses N3. DDEC 6 uses E3. Cups and head are also different. Rest of the statement is spot on...........
-
ok sorry thought they were the same animal I know the dd5 has n3

I regret buying my 2008 Cascadia with the DDEC 6 Series 60. I got one tankful with 5.49 mpg, the next one was 5.26 and my last one was back to 4.5 mpg.
I have just changed the wiring harness to the turbo actuator so if my mileage doesn't improve, then I'm going to sell my truck.
