Runs rough while under load only. It is ok at low engine load but any acceleration it runs rough and takes a long time to build turbo to high psi about 25. Before max psi would be about 30. Check engine light comes on when it's sputtering and goes off when I am going downhill or other low engine or idle conditions. Data link won't read out to my bullydog to read fault code. I am thinking it's a fuel pump but afraid it may be an injector or something expensive ...

Of course this happens right after I pick up a load. I have about 500 miles to delivery and I am grossing about 65000 I am guessing. My route will be pa 41 to 30 to 283 to 15 to 147 180 86 390w 63 20 to buffalo to Canada. Some hills but I am hoping it will be fine. I have fresh produce ..leafy greens, they are expecting delivery early a.m.

I should add I am one of these guys who really only trusts my mechanic at home ... and I'd much rather he looks at it than someone I am not familiar with. Also prefer to fix things before they break so this kind of thing doesn't happen...

Ive had a bad pump that quit with a detroit years ago, it wont sputter... MUCH... but it will starve. And you will be on the shoulder trying to get 15 mph out of it.

One time a intercooler hose on my mack quit. Poured a inky black smoke all over a scalehouse once. They were happy (Sarcasm) a screw driver and 50 cent clamp fixed that.

Another problem would be either low fuel starving you or your ECM deciding there is a problem. You should be able to get fault codes out of it. Or connect a computer to it and find out then and there.

Your battery might be starving. Voltage drops and presto sput sput sput...

A good certified mechanic rated for desiels like your Detroit will find the cause and tell you what's what. These forums will fill you with ideas. Some of which is end of days to something so simple no one thought of it.

A desiel under a ECM should run forever unless the brains are kaput or something prevents it from feeding on the fuel and air.

Could be a number of things. 1) Catching air in fuel line 2) blown o-ring on injector 3) injector just to name a few. If the light is coming on it may be an injector. Need to hook it up and see what that light is.

    Delivery made ...

Engine still running rough but not getting any worse. Sometimes it surges and has normal power but just for a short time then back to very rough. It feels like a truck that is running out of fuel except there is plenty in the tanks.

Tired. Going to bed. Mechanic can look at it tomorrow and I'll let ya know...

Does it feel like its running on 5? Sudden abrupt loss of power and lose about 15-20% of your boost? And kinda sounds like a machine gun under your hood?

If that's it, you have loose injector wiring to the injector. It happens a lot on series 60.

Doesn't really sound or feel like an injector, the roughness seems to be uniform, I once had an injector wire go bad but that was on a 6nz cat and it felt different than this. Also, if an injector wire were bad, would that throw a code? It really just feels like it's starving for fuel. I am putting it in the shop in the morning. Hope it's something simple but I am starting to think maybe I'm throwing good money after bad continuing to fix this truck. If I put a new engine in I still have an old cab with tons of miles ... I'm thinking it might be time to bite the bullet for something newer ....soon..

How do the fuel lines look.... Maybe sucking air or collapsing under load....?
