I need a good Detroit shop in the southern Calif, area or wherever. What should I pay for a GOOD inframe on my 12.7? How much more for an out of frame?? I don't want the cheap versions.

I had in 2014 dropped 30k in a inframe. Cut counterbores, bullgear, head, rockers, cam, injectors, water pump, air compressor, piston kits, oil cooler, radiator, all hoses, coolant pipes, oil pump, rebuilt jakes, motor mounts, and fuel pump. turbo and manifold only had 50,000 miles so reused it. Really only reused block, crank, and power steering pump.

If you are willing to break out your wrenchs a 12.7 cost under 2500. You shouldn't need to cut the counter bores, I've done a half dozen or so of these and none of them were so bad i couldn't clean them up with some emery cloth.
Around here, smaller independent shops quote 6500 to inframe these engines but i can't justify spending an extra 4k for something i can do over a long weekend.areelius Thanks this. -

I have worked on trucks much longer than I have driven them. I would say 80% of used engines need counter bored cut. Mind my plan was to build another million mile engine. I payed to have mine done, for two reasons. Keep customers happy I rented a truck. Someone was gonna haul there loads. Two warranty. And I promise you the warranty was worth it. Short story. They over hauled it 3 times then put a reman engine in it.

And its not the issue of cleaning counter bores. Its also to set proper liner height.

There is no one cost for an overhaul. You can overhaul an engine 100 different ways. Some guys remove the head and slap in new pistons and liners and slam it back together in a couple of days and call that "overhauled". Those are low end. Other guys also install new pistons and liners but also replace other components such as injectors, turbos, water pump, oil pump, bull gear, (requires front cover disassembly), oil cooler, reman head and so on. That is also "overhauling" an engine and can take 40 hours+ depending on what you all want done. So if you ask 50 different guys, you will get 50 different answers.

Yeah exaclly what heavy just said..........
Or you can just say screw it and drop in a factory exchange reman from detroit with 3 years warranty and call it a day. -
The only reason to cut a counter bore is if it is so badly corroded that cleaning it up can't be done without removing metal from the block. You need a solid clean surface for the liner to set on.
