I have an opportunity to purchase a 2001 Freightliner Classic with a blown head gasket for. I don’t have the money for a full rebuild done the right way, and I’m wondering if only the upper gasket set was done on it is it possible for it to last even 2 months? I know the counter bore *should* be done, but if the the protrusion was off a little, would that just blow the head gasket again immediately? In two months running it, it would pay for itself 3 times over and I could then do a real overhaul with heads, injectors, etc. I don’t think the guy ran it as soon as it became clear that the head gasket was blown, so I would think the pistons are in good shape, but I could have someone come over and borescope it potentially. If it isn’t even possible for it to run a few months, I’ll probably just go a different direction and get one that doesn’t have an immediate need for a repair, as I’d rather have a different truck if I’m planning on investing in the cost of an in-frame right off the bat. What would labor on replacing the upper gasket set cost? Thanks

What state are you in? Usually you can find a mobile guy to do the cutting. Last time my guy quoted me about 500 to travel and do all 6 holes plus chamfer the insides on a CAT.
Pull the head and check for liner scoring. Pull the pan check the bearings and crank journals. If it all looks good call a mobile guy and have him do the work and you can put it together.
You could send the head out for just a couple hundred more and get it decked and checked for cracks too.
Or you could just throw it all back together with nothing but a new gasket but I would go over it real well so you won't waste too much money and aggravation on it.VolunteerTrucker Thanks this. -

At the end of the day, I could even do the counterbore too. I know that’s gonna be pretty important for that old of an engine, if I did the counterbore now and did a full rebuild in a couple of months it probably wouldn’t need that again, right?
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Might get a couple months out of it just slapping a head gasket on depends how bad the counter bores.
