Hi
I have a 06 Western Star with a Detroit 60 Series 14,7L engine with 564,000kms and 10,300hrs on it. The previous owner (brother in law) was running Coop synthetic oil during the winter months and when I had purchased it in February, he said it wouldn't use any oil until after 150hrs then it would only use a liter every now and then.
I had changed the oil to Rotella 15w40/fleet guard oil filters and had the oil sample sent away and when the sample came back it was okay. We run gravel and after the oil change its was consuming 1-2 liters every 12-13 hrs. I have ran it for around 130hrs and changed out oil again to Rotella and Donaldson oil filters and for the first 2-3 days 12-14 hr shifts oil level stayed the same, then it started consuming 3-4 liters every 2 days. Doesn't puff any smoke and oil pressure is up to around the 55-60psi and all gauges seem normal.
Now I have been told that it will take a couple oil changes to switch out the coop additives when switching oil. I am just wondering if this is true or is there something else that can be checked? or is there an oil that Detroit's like. I ran Rotella in my C15 and didn't have any issues. I change my oil every 300-400hrs due to the gravel hauling.

Or he was lying about it not burning oil... But, I have heard of this before. Some engines just don't like certain brands of oil. Also, make sure you are not over filling it. Some engines will burn down to a certain level and stop, so don't re-add unit the oil reaches the "add" mark.
Bryan Mackesey Thanks this. -
I bought a truck in October with 12.7 Detroit. It would always use 3 gallons for 12k miles of Mobile oil.
Last oil change I switched to Rotella and it only used 1.5 gallonsmartican and Bryan Mackesey Thank this. -

I'd double check that you are not losing oil somewhere else, air tanks, coolant, leaks, etc.
I've got a 14L with 1.23 million miles and no overhaul. Last year was burning about a gallon every 8-10k miles, now I'm closer to every 6k miles. Oil samples still great, no smoke, no internal leaks.martican and Bryan Mackesey Thank this. -

I have heard of these type problems and will share one of my experiences. Shop was using brand X. Changed brands due to a new large customers preference. Another customers truck started using a lot of oil. It was not high mileage but had oil stains down the exhaust and all over the back of the cab. They talked about building it and trading it. Kept running it as it was local anyway. In about a year it stopped using oil just like it started.
I have read of different additive packages causing this type of problem. On the other hand I have seen other people that bought what ever was on sell and have no problem.
While not understanding how that works with todays oil it was common if someone changed over from nondetergent oil. Prefer to stick with the same brand and weight myself.
Not really an answer but maybe try something else. Check the turbo outlet. -
BoxCarKidd and DUNE-T Thank this.
