Had an oil change done yesterday at Petro
Truck was running perfect when I arrived
Technician over filled the engine with oil
By nearly a gallon
After I started truck to move to a different bay and perform DOT inspection, dash lit up light a Christmas tree
Check engine lights began flashing and in about three minutes truck shut down
Mechanic hooked up JPRO computer codes say EGR valve wrong position and EGR valve stuck open
By the time main tech looked at it darkness had arrived. They gave me a ride home so I have not yet looked to see if front or rear engine seals have begun leaking
Did the over fill cause EGR malfunction?
If so can it be cleaned?
Can I expect seals to now be leaking?

When it comes to overfilling an engine with oil you have to take into consideration the amount overfilled compared to the capacity at full, most Detroit 60’s hold roughly 10 gallons and I say roughly because even the manual says it varies depending on specifics but Ide say within half a gallon. You said it was a gallon overfilled which is 10% of your oil capacity..... I work with c12 & c15s mostly but from experience encountering trucks that are overfilled by roughly 30% of their max capacity when they come in and they are fine... never even throws a code, you would start running into serious trouble roughly 50% overfilled and left un-noticed, engine oil fill level is way more lenient than a transmission, I believe your problems are unrelated
Socal Xpress Thanks this. -
I would not get into that particular issue too much. Oil is the life blood of a heavy engine.
You probably will have a certain amount in there, monitoring with that stick pretty regularly with notes taken will eventually remind you how it was when you first got it. -
1 gallon over full will not do any damage your fine. The engine has no sensors for oil level other then oil pressure it self so all those dash lights have nothing to do with being 1 gallon over on the dip stick. Maybe look see if he knocked some wires off somewhere. Your egr has nothing to do with an oil change.
little cat 500 Thanks this.
