Need some advice. I have a 97 Freightliner with a Detroit 60s that was rebuilt 200k miles ago. We noticed oil in the air tanks and about the same time we went through a gallon of oil in about 2000 miles. Not sure if they are related. We have a newer turbo (about 20k miles ago) and oil sample comes back with no issues. The air builds up quick so the compressor is working but putting oil into the air lines. Question is, could we be losing that much oil through the compressor or is it likely another problem? With oil in the airlines is replacing the compressor a must or could it be another issue? Thanks for any help from those who have advice and experience.

Take the rubber intake hose off the intake manifold, see how much oil is in it. Also if it's pumping oil to the tanks, most likely its bad. Air compressor causing a Detroit to use oil is fairly common. However don't assume take a little time and diagnose it

If you have oil in the air tanks, then you need new compressor......

Ill be working on it this weekend. I've been calling around and the dealership is 650 for the compressor. I haven't found anyone else who has a reman but I will try NAPA and theres others I still need to call. Thanks for the responses!

Napa will have it. avoid the dealer. they will rape you on it.

Found one at the International dealership for 470.00. Napa didn't have one in stock and didn't want to wait for it to be shipped. Now to get the old one off.

I put the new compressor on and changed the air dryer filter. It builds up pressure but the air dryer won't purge. The compressor has a purge valve that purges air. The dryer was working great before I changed the filter. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check or change?
