I searched the forums and never found any reference to destroking a 14L Series 60 Detroit.

I`ve got a 2008 FL Cascadia with a 14L EGR S60 engine. It has 850,000 miles on it and when it needs to be rebuilt, I`d like to get better fuel economy. Aside from the usual deletes, I`m thinking of destroking the 14L a bit.

The 12.7L has a 130 mm (5.12 in) bore and 160 mm (6.3 inch) stroke. The 14L has a 133 mm bore (5.24 in) and 168 mm stroke (6.62 inch).

SO. Can I keep the 14L pistons and simply install a 12.7L crankshaft and connecting rods? Are the piston wrist pins the same size and is the distance from the top of the piston to the wrist pin the same for both pistons (less stroke)?

If that won`t work, what about keeping the 14L crankshaft, connecting rods and simply install 12,7L liners and pistons (less bore)? 3 mm or .12 inches isn`t much so I`m assuming that the 14L has thinner liners and bigger pistons but the wrist pin diameters have to be the same for this to work.

Both scenarios give a new engine displacement of 13.3L and the cost of the rebuild will be same for the smaller bore engine but the shorter stroke version means I need to buy a 12.7L crankshaft and connecting rods.

Any Detroit mechanics out there that *KNOW* the answers to my questions? I`m hoping for a small maybe 0.5 mpg improvement.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

@swaan knows these engines really well. From what I've read the cranks aren't interchangeable but I've been wrong many times before lol.

Honestly I'm not sure. No one has ever wanted to destroke a 14L ever. Lol

I think the mpg savings would be negligible. Not worth the effort and cost. You should see huge savings on fuel with just tuning and the diet plan.

I’d like to do the opposite to gain more torque. MPGs not so great anyways, not like original 12.7s. My question for @swaan is what injectors would be a good upgrade for power? Not rebuilding till next year, but thinking of doing all 6 injectors, and maybe 702 bg turbo now, as 1 injector is failing, and turbo is close to 700 k. I seriously doubt I’ll do a stroker kit!! Lol It’s just something I had wondered if anyone had, or thought about, wether it’s possibke or not. BK engine build date nov 99

5915 injectors is what most guys go with. Depending on what you have now will dictate how much more you will get hp wise.

Is the physical block the same between the two?

No they are not the same. I've never tryed it but apparently you can not put a 14L crank in a 12.7 block. The throws will hit the block.

If you check out Jacques Lafleur on YouTube (grey western star) he took a 14L HK and put 12.7 liners/pistons to make a 13.4L for his race truck but the connecting rods are different so there would be customizing to do. I highly doubt there's be any fuel mileage gains doing that though.

I'd need the serial number to be 100% sure but being a BK you should have 7650 injectors. 5915 would be a big step in the wrong direction as they're 7 sizes smaller. 7014 is what you want for an upgrade in power from the 7650s.
