Okay, in a week I go out to the range to start playing with REAL trucks and learning how to back and manuver them.
My biggest concern is I seriously lack depth perception. The impression I'm getting from instructors is that it can be handled and not to worry about it. I am worried about it and if I can't drive a truck because of it, they still have their money in the end.
Is depth perception something that can be dealt with. I know I'll have to GOAL alot and have no problems with that. I'm just looking for to see what others have to say on the subject.

Always good to GOAL! I know it may not seem like it now but eventually you will develop the needed skills. It will take time and practice but before long you will be able to blind side back into an alley dock with the rising sun right in your eyes! Just don't let other people rush you and if you are in doubt, GOAL!!!

you will also be able to to use timing..on the range.. like when I'm blind side parallel.. I lose the cone in my right convect mirror ..right before I lose the cone on the right.. I count to 3 ..then I can go back to center point and bam..Im right on spot...I know it wont work too well in the real world..but it works on the range..but to a point it will..but I can get out and look..more then 2 times in the real world..lol

Thanks to both of you. I have vision in both eyes but I see the world at one eye at a time so my depth perception is pretty messed up. It looks like good math skills will help in backing, but what about see forward. the hood is pretty long and it seems to be easy to not see a car right on top of the grill. any ideas???

stay back and dont let the cars get under your grill
even at stop lights---make sure you can see their tires -
but sadly we know all too well, there are too many truck drivers that make sure they take up ALL that space in front.navyvet1994 Thanks this. -
I have the same issue and I was just wondering how you were doing? Are you having any problems? Thanks

When I get out and look I pick out "land marks" to try and spot up with as I do a maneuver. There's something different about cone 3 let's just say for the sake of argument. well that's about where I need to aim for anyway so i don't over shoot my blindside parallel back. So, as I go back, I'm checking my mirror, AFTER I'VE DONE MY WALK AROUND, and when it looks like my trailer duels are even with it, that's where I stop.
I've found it's easier to see when 2 objects are across from each other than try and judge how far from the end cone I am. -
Depth perception can be a problem, even with 20/20. Isn't that why a driver you're passing will flash you in ? Because you're not sure you have cleared him, right ? Also, go to any truck stop with a fence behind the back row and observe how the fence is leaning from being backed into so many times.
