I have a line that needs to be replaced. it goes to coolant filter. thought about just eliminating the filter which would eliminate 2 hoses 4 ends & multiple places to develop leaks, & just add the coolant additive. any thoughts? ddec 3 11.1

I think if good sca levels are maintained in the coolant, than a filter is unnecessary. I don't recall seeing any coolant filters on my new trucks but could be wrong.

Fix the leaks. If I remember right Detroit sticks theirs out on the frame rail. Use good silicone hoses and constant torque clamps. Don't use cheap hose clamps they will eat into the hoses. With an old 11.1 you definitely want to keep nitrite levels in check. If you think you can moniter that constantly take it off. But I'd leave of on. Cory..as for new trucks all MX, Volvo, Mack, Detroit, and Cummins have them.

I was uncertain on the new ones, and now I know. I agree that if you feel you can maintain the correct levels in the coolant take it off.

Old Detroit motors are real susceptible to cavitation. I love me a Detroit, but some things can't skimp on.

Don't be penny-wise and dollar foolish.

Trying to save a few pennies here, might cost you thousands in the future.

Keep the filter and use the spin ons that have the additive. You'll never have to worry about it.

I do not have any leaks, but will change due to age. I had a leak 4 years ago at the petcock. the water filter housing is part of the alt bracket along with the a/c bracket.

I change my coolant every 3 years new coolant with distilled water only no tap or garden hose water. I have always used the additive with my filters, just as a precaution. never saw any sign of damage in the entire cooling sys. over 17 years with this truck.

I used to have a filter and check the sca levels when i ran green coolant. When I went to long life coolant CAT removed the filter and I change it every 3 years or so. That was 10 years ago.
