I've been taking hourly training at a driving school. I left for business trips and returned to a new pre-trip inspection packet. It has some changes (like 1/4" belt deflection?!) that just seem wrong and others that seem...arbitrary. It led me to start looking for official pre-trip inspection information.
In the flight training world, I would be able to go to the FAA and find flight test standards. I could even get a book of all of the test questions and answers. I keep hoping for something like that in the DOT world.
Yesterday I contacted the Indiana State Police. I got someone who just took his CDL-A. I asked about official wording for the pre-trip inspection. Specifically, is it enough to say what's published in Section 11 (Vehicle Inspection Test) of the Indiana Commercial Driver’s License Manual or do I need to do the "not cracked/bent/broken, no missing parts/bolts, securely mounted, ..." version? He said there's no official standard but he did the wordy version and passed. He told me "They just check off everything you say until you score enough points" so I asked where they get this checklist. It seems to be a secret.
So...does Indiana really keep the pre-trip inspection standard a secret? If not, where can I see what they want to hear? The versions I've found on YouTube show that people have wide interpretation of what should be said.
definitive pretrip inspection wording (for Indiana)?
