Hi, I just got out of a discussion with a Perspective Employer who says that when he listed the ad for "Over The Road Driver" that he was receiving responses to folks who were looking at OTR as 2 to 6 Months out before ever getting home. I argued and then declined his offer, What is Over The Road? His Definition is a bit far fetched. Thank You in advance for your expertise!

He wants gypsies with no family or home to form teams to run his trucks 24/7 coast to coast, stopping only long enough to maybe change the oil and put a new set of tires on. They're out there, especially in California.

If I am not home every weekend for at least 48 hours I call it over the road!...NOT doing it either!
3 to 4 nights in the truck a week at most.

Used to be a driver delivering freight days from home,in a truck days to weeks at time. Now it's whatever they can get to warm a seat!

In all seriousness now, all major OTR companies, megacarriers especially, compete & attract new employees (ie. drivers) by advertising limited time away from home, typically 2 wks to 4 wks. I believe any OTR position that the company "assumes" meaning 2 to 6 months is way above the norm, for being away from home.
Granted, many drivers do work longer duration time periods away from home, but this being not the norm, I think he should have stated this in his ad.Last edited: Oct 24, 2013
