I am lost. Does anyone get paid for DH miles? Is the real problem that someone is booking your loads for you?
-
as an independent i charge dead head on current load if going to a bad area and in good areas charge DH to get to the next load.
Felicia1973 Thanks this. -
Who is this you charge? Or do you mean, you figure in the DH cost when you agree on a rate?
-
I'm leased on and pick my own loads. I just have to factor my DH in with the rate. If I'm taking it to a dead zone than I need to be aware of my DH out so I know if the rate I'm getting is worth it.
Felicia1973 Thanks this. -
Thanks guys, i appreciate the feedback.

It is hard to "charge" for deadhead usually. A load pays what it pays. Sometimes you can negotiate if an agent calls "asking" for some help. But personally, I look at a load. See what it pays then add the dead head to it and see if it still pays enough for me to pull it. We all have different figures, thresholds.

Typically the only ones that can get away with charging for DH are specialized carriers.

So true. But OD and stuff can SOMETIMES have a leg to stand on. Or the few middle of no place (lol) loads.
PS. Oscar I would love to get with you and start learning more about specialized freight.Last edited: Feb 10, 2015

It's like "fuel surcharge" for individual loads. No such thing... BUT, what you do is work it into the rate you negotiate for. If for example, you need $2.00 per mile to cover your costs and make a profit, you have 100 miles to dead head, and it costs you 50-cpm for mileage and operational costs... that's $50. If you have a 1000-mile run that's 5-cpm you need to add to your rate. $2.05 for the mathematically challenged.
...but you already knew that, right?!!!
