I'm finding very conflicting information here. I ran my serial number on Jacobs engine brake website for information and it says I have a DDEC 3. After looking at my ECM and comparing pictures to DDEC 3 and 4, it also appears I have a DDEC 3 ECM. The vehicle in question is a 98 model.

Was DDEC IV an option? Or am I missing something? From what wikipedia says, DDEC 4 came out in 97. I have all the common DDEC III items, including a non-waste gate turbo. The engine sticker is missing the build date. This is in a bus too.

I was also unable to find any solid information between the differences in the DDEC 3 and 4. I know DDEC 2 you could pretty much do nothing...What's the difference between the DDEC 3 and 4 performance and setting wise?

I'm also reading DDEC 3 was superior than DDEC 4.

Most likely a DDEC 4, The DDEC 4 is a direct replacement for the DDEC 3. The differences are internal, they physically look the same, but the DDEC 4 has more memory, better processor, etc. The ECM should have a decal on it telling you what it is. Any truck that has a DDEC 3, if the ECM fails and you buy a new one, you'll get a DDEC 4 as a replacement.

The better electronics allowed better tunes in the DDEC 4. If I remember right, DDEC 3 maxed out at 470 HP for a factory tune, the DDEC 4's could go to 500 HP on a 12.7.
