So DD13 470hp 1650tq vs DD15 505 1750tq engine rates. Hauling dump trailer running around 100,000lbs most of the time. Ordering it with the allison auto, it is $1200 more for the DD15 and will we really see it run that much better? Only plus I can see is a stronger engine brake. We can get tge dd16 rated at 560hp 1850tq for $2800 more but I think we will be burning even more fuel for nothing. If we go with the dd13 I will order it as a western star 4800SB if we go bigger the 4900SB.

What are your thoughts and why?

With the newer engines, overpowering isn't advised as it needs heat get the exhaustsystem to work at it's best.
So i have been told by several mechanics.
And the torqueratings show that pullingpower in all 3 engines isn't that far apart.

We do pull a lot of good size hills so getting heat shouldn't be a problem. Like the idea of the fuel economy with the DD13 but we have one with the maxforce 13l rated for 475hp and it is a turd for pulling. Only has 43k miles and is a year old and we are looking to spec this truck to replace that. .

dd16 (rated up to 600 hp and 2050 lb ft) are meant for severe duty like gas wells, oil fields, towing, and all other stuffs. dd15 (currently rated up to 505HP and 1850 lb ft), maybe, depends on hp. dd13 is like a 12.7 detroit. Great for mpg and not much power. Rated up to 470 hp and 1650 lb ft. all have quiet jakes. I only drove the dd15.

Dd 15 is not rated for 1850. It is only rate for 1650/1750tq

If you look you will see the 1750 is not even for your first couple gears.

I think when it was introduced, they had it available as 1850tq. Lower gear means more power. Higher gear means more torque.
