must be an east coast thing, cuz i haven't seen any out here in cali.

i think you're right though, i would not want to lose the whole side of any single axle.

fedex dollies are singles, or vast majority in central us are. I dont quite see why they are doing only the dollies and nothing else.

Some of the ag companies out here put supersingles on their tomato trailers and sometimes you'll see them on the shoulder with a tire blowed out waiting for the service truck. Not surprising considering the condition many of those tires are in and the amount they are overload by. All things considered, I'd much rather be the driver with the blowed out tire than the guy in the car next to him when it went.

Just about all your major gasoline companies out west use them and I've had no problems in the 10 years we had them on our 4 axle trailers. The companies run them because they can get more gallons on the truck and it will reduce rollovers since the S/S lower the CG. However, I wouldn't want to run them on a single axle but I don't see a major accident waiting to happen.

One reason why FedEx(i used to work for them) uses the extra-wide instead of duals is because they don't have the pilot wheel(the dolly wheel that cranks up and down to support the converter dolly) and the drivers must either move the converter dolly by hand or use a tractor. At any rate when hooking the the back of the lead trailer or a tractor, the driver must lift the dolly with no help from any pilot wheels.

The extra-wide tires vs. duals makes the dolly so much easier to manuver by hand.

Where i'm at now, we use duals and i would not want to use extra-wides on a dolly. Tractor drives ok if tandem axle, but nowhere else.
