I want to get cdl's back, had them years ago but wasn't using them so when it came time to get physical didn't have the time so I just let them go, now, 10 years later I'm taking lorazepam for anxiety. I take 2mg in the evening, I have NO side affects, doesn't make me light headed or " give me a buzz " or tired the next day, just controls anxiety. I have been driving for 20 years, really longer than that, just smaller trucks that don't require cdl's or dot physicals, no incidents or tickets until about a year ago, I bumped into someone in a traffic jam, [ in my personal vehicle, not in a truck while working ] will I be able to pass physical being on lorazepam ? I even talked to a state dot cop who said its really up to the doctor giving the physical, I read an older thread on here from someone taking xanax and they said it never even came up during physical and wouldn't show on drug test because they test for pot and cocaine and that kind of stuff, and I'm not sure it would show up anyway because of the small amount I take. Any opinions on this ? Any and all input much appreciated. p.s. lorazepam is generic ativan,,, FYI

I'm not sure about the drug issue, but you only get one CDL .

First the OP needs to go through the process of getting a CDL just like any new driver would. Before doing so get the prescribing Physician to write a letter stating all the facts and take this letter to a registered medical examiner and they will decide if a physical can be accomplished. Im at the VA hospital on my smartphone and off the top of my head I can't remember if that drug is disqualifying.

    Two things.

    First.

Trucking is going to be VERY STRESSFUL to you. To me. And you and you and yes you in the back. Always has been. It's a form of battle.

Instead of getting into all of the little things about anxiety medicines vs CDL trucking (Never mind being under influence in a car...) I'll present this link. Read it carefully.

Your particular medicine needs 10 to 20 hours per dose to half life (Metabolize) out of your system.

According to the chart in the link presented here, that medicine taking over time requires you to be clean at least 7 days to be sure it's out of your system.

I refuse to address why you are taking that medicine, that is between you and the doctor. I actually take one at night off label to get at muscles that wont relax at night only myself when needed and I do not drive three days minimum after that dose. (I drive maybe 10 miles every three months anyway...)

But I am going to tell you up front... if that little bitty anxiety is a problem now out of trucking, getting back into it with all the changes, micromanagement and so forth It's going to hurt you if you cannot control that stress. Ive done some in the past long ago. But compared to the changes Ive seen around 2003 and after I got out for good in the 2009 (Blindness and post surgery) Im glad I got out while it's relatively still enjoyable to do trucking.

If You Take These Medications, You Might Not Get A CDL

I can say from personal experience I’ve passed my DOT with anti-depressants. Your prescribing physician will just have to write a letter that you are taking it as directed. I got that stuff signed, and brought it back the same day; next day I was back in my truck. I don’t know if that’ll be how it works for your situation, I only learned this process because I failed one.

Somebody else said “CDL’s” recently. Funny. Good luck OP. Hope it works out.

No. It is a Physician giving their medical opinion about your need for such a med and how it is taken. Physicians do this a lot.I might also add it is how the FMCSA asks you to do it.

There's absolutely nothing immoral or illegal about what is being recommended to you. Your doctor would be writing a letter of fact. This is what you take, and how much you take, for the following reasons. The doctor wouldn't be the individual "passing judgement". The M.E. would know if it's a disqualifier, or not.

    Good luck to you.
