I am going to look at a 1981 Peterbilt 359, which has a Cummins NTC-400 motor in it. The person that has this, bought it at an auction and has no prior maintenance history on the truck. He told me it misses out a bit, and smokes a bit when first started up, but after it warms up, it runs down the road pretty well. He thought it could need a new injector, but isnt a mechanic, so it's just his guess. Without any more information, can you guys tell me what to possibly look for when I go for a test drive? The truck looks well kept, inside and out, but appearance isnt everything.
thanks,

the smoke is just the nature of a big cam i'm assuming it is......... look on the block drivers side behind or below fuel pump should say.... big cam....in raised letters (or one look at the cam follewers by someone who knows these engines can tell they are bigger than small cam ) ......check oil before you start it and if it's got a quick drain valve in the oil pan crack it open just to see if you get oil or antifreeze .........changing injectors is no big deal you can buy a whole set for what you may pay for 1 injector in newer engines .....it may just need overhead run ......where i would start....... but if it's beige it'll smoke blue ti'll she warms up
