    Hello all,

I'm looking into buying a cummins n14 select plus tomorrow. Never had this motor in any of the trucks i've owned before. I would appreciate if someone can shed some light on what things to look out for other than the usual oil/water contamination, misfire etc.

    Thanks

If your hear it chirping, almost like a bird tweeting, then it may have a broken head bolt, or in my case a head gasket ready to let go.

Oil leaks.. Front crank seal, accessory drive seal, and on the drivers side the cam followers.

Does the N14 have the oil leaking wiring harness grommet at the back of the head like the M11?

Even with minor issues, the N14 is a solid powerplant. Economical to rebuild and easy to work on. What HP/torque rating is it?

Pretty good engines. They seem to be prone to leaks of all sorts lol. They have good power and can get really good mileage if driven right.

They like clean fuel, cummins spec.is a 10 micron filter. The guy before me was using 16 micron,he was dropping injectors every two years like clockwork.

I have two of these, one with 1.6 mil and another with 1 mil. Both are 500hp and both get 6.5 mpg with 40k loads and driving 65-70 and 7.5 mpg with light loads. The do leak at camshaft, costs about $1200 to fix. PAI makes good aftermarket parts for them, for example oil cooler costs $300 compare to $800 at the dealer. If something happens on the road you can go to anybody, any truck dealer or private shop and they will fix it. So yeah, go ahead and get it
