Went to the bank this morning and they said what ever I need a check for is good with them. New truck, rebuilt motor, used truck all the same to them except interest rates.
Talked to the head mechanic at the Pete dealer on the side today. He came by the shop to talk about it. He told me that you can't buy a compatible cam from cummins anymore so you have to buy all new followers and jakes too if you replace the cam. Never heard that before. Went and fueled truck and found a bad wheel seal on a drive. Ran to kenworth and got a new one and asked them to shoot me a price on a long block and a complete crate motor.
Plot thickens.
Thanks again!

Yes they are cummins reman units. The Pete mechanic is a local neighbor. Today was the first time I have meet him. Our local international dealer is a joke. They have 3 used trucks in stock and no new ones. I have been there 4 times to buy parts and never seen anyone there for anything. Never have enything I need in stock and have to order. I use the kw dealer for parts and they treat me as good there as anybody.

I remember reading aswell the new cams are wider in some way, and requires an upgrade. Other option maybe to buy a Motor that's due for a rebuild and build it up on the side as time allows then when your done swap them over, I have seen some complete 870/871 for sale pretty cheaply needing a refresh, I know of one now you'd probably buy for a few grand, complete.
Tug Toy and dustinbrock Thank this. -

Looks like I can get a complete engine from cummins picked up at there local place for right at $25k out the door. 3 year 300k mile warranty. New sensors, fuel system (ifsm), wire harnesses, manifold, turbo, water pump. The whole thing.
Tempting.
What 7 days to r and r it if I take my time and clean up the frame rails and what not? Figure another $3 or $4k worth of crap while I got it out? Clutch and trans are new in the last year so no problem there.
Got a quote for an inframe of $14k to $18k from a local independent with a 1 year from him only. All cummins parts.
Thing is the truck is only worth about $20k when I'm done. Maybe?Last edited: Mar 17, 2017

Ok let's tackle a couple things here.
Rawzes engine is a cm871, yours will be (I believe) a cm570. There will be alot of differences so his videos can be used as reference but that's all.
For the cm870, 871, 2250 and 2350 you can buy a reman head or you can buy brand spanking new from the factory for $800 more. I do not know if they are still available for the 570 but I do know when I called my local cummins, they told me there are no new heads. I made her dig harder and she was shocked. I can't remember, part number ends in "rx" and if they put "nx" it will be the new one. For me there was a wait for the head but for the small amount of money, it is worth it.
The mechanic at peterbilt knows exactly what he is talking about. On my cm871 when I went to replace my one camshaft, there was a update. They widened the cam lobes to help with heat distribution but you need to buy new rockers for it as well. Most mechanics do not know this unless they've seen the TSB from cummins and will put the new cam on with the old rockers and never know there was a problem...... but there will be.
Cummins recon engines are sketchy at best.
As someone stated, I know many guys who have great luck with ipd cylinder kits rather than oem, I used fp diesel in my cat but have yet to know how well it will stand up.
Everything depends on how much you want to spend. If you like this truck and want to keep it and can finance anything then I suggest very very strongly that you go to rawze.Com and seek out Gearhead or Mr.Hagg and get one of them to do it, it will be the best investment you ever made.
If you want to save a bunch of money and do it yourself as cheaply as possible. Buy IPD cylinder kits and bring the head to a local diesel component rebuilder for remanning. Absolutely don't buy any of the cheaper eBay rebuild kits, you will regret it.Liquidforce and Tug Toy Thank this. -
Thank you, that is a wealth of information. @dustinbrock What is schetchy on the factory reman? I can do what ever I want with this but would like to keep it fairly simple process. I would love to build an engine myself but being a trucker only allows me about a week at a time of down time. I know my motor is diffrent than what rawze talks about but close.

Keep in mind that Cummins wants to maximize profits. You would think they have your best interest in mind..... but they don't.
"Within spec" is the scariest term anyone can ever say to me! What is acceptable for cummins to reuse is sometimes pretty sketchy and you can bet that anything that is on the very lower edge of that spec still gets used because they sell you that engine for the sake price no matter how much parts they had to put into it, of course they'll try and profit more by doing less.
A reman head is not a new head, especially on a isx. And all recon engines come with reman heads, some with the wrong cams/ rockers. Some with measurements that may be within spec but to a good mechanic, they would call it a ticking time bomb.
I may be a little over the top, alot of people buy recon engines and they are great. I prefer not to bring my isx back to cummins spec, I prefer better then cummins spec because cummins spec is junk. Did you know that I cannot even order a rebuild kit for my engine without first tearing it apart? I need to measure my liners and check which connecting rods I have....... they literally don't even know. They dropped the ball so bad on the 2250's as well. They even have tsb out about mismatched cylinder packs in some engines so I'm sorry if i don't trust Thier workmanship.
I want my new motor to go longer than 5 year/ 1 million miles if possible. What I don't want is to drop a valve after 2 or 3 years.Cat sdp Thanks this.
