I never really thought a lot about the cam failures on the cummins motors untill I was talking too an o/o recently and he was rebuilding his motor at 14000hrs. Talking too him I realized he hadnt set his valves in the life of that motor. Could there be a connection between the lack of maitinance and the cam fails? Basically his cam lobe flaked off and the sheavings went thru everything. He caught it when he heard a funny noise in the top end. Valve sets every 2000 hrs critical imo. Food for thought. Any input?

Yes if they are to loose it can cause it to start chipping the cam but oil changes not getting done will also cause it

cummins states 500,000 is when it needs to be tuned up all of the components are supposed to wear at the same rate. so cummins says. valves get tight as they wear

Intake valves get tighter and exhaust valves tend to get looser but for me I recommend running the overhead at the 100 thousand mile mark then every 350 after that but I know plenty of people that have had overhead done at less then 100 thousand miles and never touched again they do fine

according to the shops i talked too. 100k miles on overhead.

i've also heard weak oil pressure is the cause of cam failure. isx isn't know for the best pressure. let alone up in the head.

and when them engines are idling. only pumping out 20 lbs.

back in the early 80's. honda motorcycles had the same problem. the V4 engines ate cams every 5000 miles. becuase of poor oil pressure in the head.
i had a V65. and it WASN'T the powerhouse those things were brand new.

So is there a higher pressure oil pump maybe?

    i been wondering that myself.

back in the days when i was a auto mechanic. if you wanted to build an engine. you had a choice of stock pump, high pressure, or high volume. don't know if that's still available for gas engines and i have no idea if that was or is an option on diesels.

in reading that link. there's discussion about how the motor is hard on oil. possibly caused by the egr.

i do know that every isx i drove. would lose pressure about 10,000 miles. by the time service was due at 15,000. pressure was down 4 lbs.

what started as 40 lbs. driving rpms. was down to 36 or 35 by the time service was due.

Never understood why Cummins likes low oil pressure starting with the N14, Cat will run 80psi cold and 60psi hot. If you idle a hot ISX down you can get the low oil pressure alarm to go off. Thought about trying to figure out how to raise the pressure but it would probably blow a seal out somewhere else.
