Cummins ISX anti-freeze

Yes it can. ISX had problems with the EGR coolers starting in 2009. There should be a recall but you know how that goes. Just keep a close eye on the antifreeze level. It will slowly get worse over 2-3 months before total failure. Other than that they are great engines. The later models I don't know. You'd think they would've taken care of it by now with modified parts like they use in the fix. Maybe they have a wait and see approach because once they admit a problem the recall is inevitable.

I was one of the first ones it happened to. Cummins sent a team from their company out to inspect my engine repair. I've run into many drivers since then that had the same problem.

 

Warranty fix only after failure , sounds familiar .


And the burnt coolant does your dpf no good at all.

 

The burnt coolant sticks in the dpf filter like glue. Can't be cooked or cleaned out.
It will still work just not as well , or as long as it might have...

And the oem will admit to none of this.


I know their are some here who can explain the technical details better then I . Hopefully they will jump in.......

 

Isx is known for that mine did the same thing egr cooler leaking.

 

Just make sure you double check for any cold leaks externally or ones that are slow enough to not really leave a puddle anywhere. You might have to check everything for just the coolant stains in order to find them. Hate to see anyone start ripping out coolers or more if you don't have to. But yes, the coolers do fail on every single one. We typically see most cooler failures between 600,000 to 800,000 km.

 

the truck i drove last winter still has it's dpf that was on there when i drove it.

i used up 4 gallons of water from portland to yard in utah before mechanics were convinced something was wrong. after i complained for 2 months that steam was coming out the exhuast when exhuast cooled down enough.

that was in the middle of winter. cooler got replaced at the end of february.

 

cummins has a super sealer that you can use, try it on one or two trucks see what happens. if it is a cooler this will stop the leak. imho its a patch.
